Does anyone know which supermarket yule log is best? Only have Iceland, Tesco, M&S, Lidl to shop at.
Lidl looks good for the price but no reviews online.

Always buy M&S as have tried others and IMHO they don’t come close!

@Wizzelina which one from M&S?

The Lidl one is disappointing, IMO. It looks good, but tastes bland just sweet.

Oopsiedaisyy · 11/12/2022 18:55

There's a good housekeeping magazine review on line, asda did well

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 11/12/2022 19:10

Oh, disappointing about the Lidl one - I had my eye on it.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 11/12/2022 19:14

Best ones are the ones you made it yourself. But imo, if you buy it from supermarkets M&S, Tesco, Liddle, Iceland, in that order. Iceland food is just crap, tbh. Edible, but not nice at all, tbh, I bought some once, never again.

StrawberryWater · 11/12/2022 19:19

Usually go M&S but can’t find them for love nor money this year.

The Tesco one is very, very nice. We sampled one recently and it was pretty much perfect.

Avoid Waitrose. Their yule log is vile. No flavour and went stale very quickly. 🤮

I don't doubt it but I'm nowhere near a good enough cook to bake my own chocolate Swiss roll 😁

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 11/12/2022 20:14

@PlaitBilledDuckyPuss
I really don't think so, at all. Making a swiss roll is easiest, tbh. You need to just make very thin cake big enough to roll it and put lovely stuff inside.
It was one of my first cake I ever made and turned out to be lovely.

The one time I tried it, it cracked into fragments when I tried to roll it up Xmas Sad

The Morrisons The Best version is lovely. Really fudgy and gooey.
I've had it every year for a few years now. £5 I think.

HermioneWeasley · 11/12/2022 20:18

I was also coming on to say Morrisons, but I don’t think it’s on your list of shops nearby?

uncomfortablydumb53 · 12/12/2022 12:40

Asda " extra special" is gorgeous
£4.50 this year but worth every penny imo

Oneofthosewsillydays · 16/12/2022 19:41

I don't rate the M&S or Asda ones, the sponge is dry as well.. Tesco i've heard isn't as nice as it used to be this year, i haven't tried it though.
The Morrisons chocolate fudge one is gorgeous but very rich; one small slice is definitely enough. I'm not sure if you have a Morrisons.

The lidl one I do want to try as have had their delux chocolate fudge cake in the past, and that has always been nice, dark and moist. I've heard it is nice and moist sponge, I might get it! Aldi, I don't like the sugar topping this year.

Oneofthosewsillydays · 16/12/2022 19:42

Oh forgot to say I'm not sure if you have a Waitrose but heard theirs is lovely, I haven't tried it, but may if can't get the lidl one!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/12/2022 19:56

I bought a Sainsbury's one today. It looks much smaller than I remember from previous years! They've been nice enough in the past, but do need a bit of thick cream on the side to cut through the chocolate.

Roselilly36 · 16/12/2022 20:16

We had the Tesco finest one, very nice it was too.

Greenshake · 16/12/2022 20:34

The fresh one from Sainsburys is fabulous - £8.

Nigella’s is so easy, I hadn’t made one for 30 years for fear of the crackage but it turned out great 👍

Moro93 · 16/12/2022 21:31

I’m glad a couple of people have mentioned Morrison’s being nice, I’ve ordered one from there this year!
I don’t normally get Yule log but wanted to try one for a change.

Iceland luxury mince pies are lovely as is their Christmas cake this year.

panko · 16/12/2022 21:39

I wish they'd make a mega mini roll for xmas

ouch321 · 16/12/2022 21:45

I've already recommended the Morrisons one on this thread but last night I was in Lidl and saw they had a Deluxe Log for £4 which I tried when I got home.

It's meh. Certainly not as nice as the Morrisons version.

Reindear · 16/12/2022 22:07

M and s one (not the one in the fridge) has lovey icing but the sponge is dry. I didn’t like the Tesco one (standard tho not finest). I’m going to have to try the Morrisons one I think

DC1214 · 16/12/2022 22:16

Waitrose vegan one is surprisingly good, I’m not vegan but off dairy now because feeding baby with allergies and this has satisfied serious chocolate withdrawal.
