Freiheit - why

WHY do you only hear Keeping the Dream Alive at Christmas time? (although apologies to all Freiheit obsessives who play it year round). There's absolutely no mention of snow, Christmas, reindeer, mistletoe and there are no sleigh bells in the background.

Is it the only song not to have anything to do with Christmas that's become a Christmas standard? Even Stay another Day has sleigh bells. Certainly keeping the royalties dream alive for Freiheit though!

Top marks to Gary Davies for playing Wombling Merry Christmas yesterday though!

I've told my family that I want that song played at my funeral - as long as I die in the summer Grin Grin

I love it and it was NO1 in the late 80s over Christmas

It has a Beatlelish sound to it

Wombling Merry Christmas is brilliant, good old Ooh Gary Davis

Love it

For some reason I always thought Keeping The Dream Alive was a Paul McCartney song.😳
But FGTH always makes me feel Christmassy.

They did a survey once on some late night programme asking people who it was by and the majority said Paul McCartney.

Had to Google it and don’t recognise the song. I’m 41 so clearly have been living under a rock!

Everydaywheniwakeup · 08/12/2022 19:10

I love it, not heard it at all this year yet, but it's such a lovely song. The video was wintery IIRC.

woodhill · 08/12/2022 19:20

@ShowOfHands

Yes when it came out I assumed it was

It sounded a bit like Pipes of Peace

mellongoose · 08/12/2022 19:26

'Let it snow' has no mention of Christmas 🎄

Remember all those X-Factor acts that always got the number 1 spot for years on end? They don't seem to play those anymore (thankfully).

The various Lad Baby sausage roll-based songs seem to die a death and plummet into unplayed obscurity pretty quickly, too - thankfully.

I mean, if somebody with my username still doesn't want to hear them, then who on earth does?! Grin

Please tell me they're not doing one this year! I know it was for a worthy cause and all but God they were awful.

As a self proclaimed expert on the subject I have to say that we wish you a wombling merry Christmas is the best Christmas song ever and should get more airplay🎅

Totally agree - epic sax break

Love the drum beat and the 70s vibe - WMC

The one song that does have Christmas in the title but doesn't get played very much at all is St Etienne's "I was born on Christmas Day". As someone who has a Christmas Day birthday, that song is so much better than "when a child is born" which is what I had to suffer people singing at me, Every. Bloody. Year for decades.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 09/12/2022 13:31

It's odd how many great Christmas songs don't get played very much at all during the festive season. I love 'That'll Be Christmas' by Thea Gilmore - brilliantly radio-friendly too - but you hardly ever hear it played at all.

I think Noddy and Roy Wood must know some very scandalous personal secrets about some very powerful people!

ShowOfHands · 10/12/2022 07:42

I love That'll Be Christmas (and Thea Gilmore in general).
