Thinking of changing DD's main present...WWYD?

I've finished my Christmas shopping. It's done and wrapped and we're good to go.

I have 3 DC. My youngest DD is 4. Up until this weekend, there wasn't anything she really wanted for Christmas aside from a unicorn toy which I bought but it wasn't expensive and not a significant part of her budget. The rest of her presents were me taking educated guesses at what she'd love and I'm happy with what I bought for her.

Her biggest present in terms of budget is a Magic Mixie. She has a few of the mini ones and loves them and I've seen her get excited at seeing the big ones on adverts so I thought (and still do think) this will be a winner.

However, we were in a toy shop at the weekend picking out a present for their new baby cousin's first Christmas, and she saw and fell in love, and I mean REALLY fell in love, with an Our Generation doll with a pony set. It was quite hard work pulling her away from it!! So I've immediately earmarked it for a birthday present (not till June). She has an Our Generation doll and my older DD has two which they play with together, and she has a new doll outfit as one of her presents.

But I'm wrestling with whether I should get her this doll she saw. Or do I stand firm with what I've bought? In honesty she hasn't mentioned the OG doll since, but I saw the love in her eyes! It wouldn't be twitching as such as I would probably hold back the magic mixie for birthday so it wouldn't throw out the budgets for my older two DC. The doll is roughly the same price as the mixie.

What would you do?

Hmmm

I don’t know.

She loved it in the shop. But she hasn’t mentioned it since. Maybe she doesn’t actually want it as much as she seemed to in the shop.

£70 is a lot for something that attracted her attention, but that she might have already forgotten about.

Before making a decision, is it worth exploring whether she still feels she wants it? Then if she does, get it.

if the MM was heavily discounted, if she doesn’t want it later, then you may not lose that much selling it on.

We had this the other day with a big truck in Morrisons with a tool box on the back, 1/2 price at £12.50! We went in to buy pants (potty training) and he fell in love with it!

I've thought about getting it, I've spent less on him than his brother, though his look bigger so I could without it being unfair. I haven't though, he's got a good amount and I think more would have the potential to be overwhelming.

They both have march birthdays so we're going to get him a better big truck for that instead

Oh dear, all the more rational people are coming along now!

You did the right thing, I always look at play value (so how long they will play with x, craft with x, read x etc) so the variety is good and it’s gotta be said that she is going to get WAY more play value over the OG doll and pony rather than the magic mixies which is quite flash in the pan.

dd has an emergency sew cool that I have to balance out now on the same basis!

FawnFrenchieMum · 05/12/2022 15:40

They are only four once! as long as you haven't got into debt then I would definitely have got it!

Floralnomad · 05/12/2022 15:53

Good decision @CoffeeChocolateWine

MmedeGouge · 05/12/2022 16:09

I look at play value too.
In my experience the doll and pony offer more.
They will probably be a more memorable present for her too. I remember waking up to find a special doll the Christmas that I was four.
I still have her half a century later!

Tdcp · 05/12/2022 16:13

I'd have gotten her the doll too though I am soft and probably would have given her both for Christmas 😂

CoffeeChocolateWine · 05/12/2022 17:10

Thank you all for helping me justify the purchase! Eases the slight 😬 feeling!

And @MmedeGouge, your comment really made me smile...that you can remember opening that special doll on Christmas morning when you were 4. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy to think that could be the same for my girl too. I'm excited about giving it to her (which I can't say I was massively about the Magic Mixie...was more excited that I good it for a good price!)

I would have done the same OP! Christmas magic. Another poster mentioned magic mixie coming from siblings, I think that's a sweet idea! Or I would try to sell it, but I think you were right to get the doll!

Thanks. Yes I meant to reply to that comment and forgot. But another purpose for yesterday's shopping trip was to take the DC to do their Christmas shopping which they've now done so sadly not an option either. Although my DS (14) chose to buy her an outfit for her other OG doll so that will go down well!

You’ve done exactly what I would have done OP. I can’t resist seeing my DDs faces so happy. I’ve gone and bought extra gifts like this before. I like to go OTT at Christmas so I’d probably give them both to her, but if don’t want to then save the MM till her birthday or as others have suggested give it her as a gift from her siblings.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 06/12/2022 09:36

Hooray! My DD mentioned the 'horsey and doll set' yesterday...further justifying my purchase 😆

😀

Inasec24 · 07/12/2022 17:17

You were so right to get it. Those magic Christmases when they are little are so few.

I would give her both, explain to your older 2 her pile looks bigger but you spent the same.
