Filling the stocking without waking them!

Last yr the then 9 year old. Stayed awake until 4am! Every time we tried to sneak in they sat up!

I tried to suggest leaving the stocking on the fireplace or by bedroom door. But that's a big no go.

They're personalised so cant do the swap for a pre filled one :/

@RedHelenB - we still did the mince pie, plate, drink for Santa thing. Carrot for Rudolph. Just left no empty stocking out . Was still amazing when a full stocking appeared the next morning.

Due to increased reindeer fuel costs, the sleigh can't be left idling. So Santa has requested one easy access drop off point in each house.

You are over thinking this one. You don't need notes, elves or sneaking about. Just tell the children 'this year we are leaving the stockings downstairs'

Yes, this. 9yo knows anyway. They'll pretend and have you sneaking about like this for years, but they know

Two hours of swimming on Christmas Eve followed by a three mile walk home "to see the lights". Tired them out.

Then stockings downstairs. DC went down in the morning to fetch them up to our bedroom.

I never believed in making life difficult.

My parents used to buy pairs of actual stockings in different colours. Pink, blue, red, black, etc. We used to choose which we wanted when we went to bed. Parents would fill the other half of the pair up and swap. I used to love the real stocking as went from tiny and unstretched to a huge snake of gifts on Christmas morning. DH always had his knitted sock shape in the lounge and that’s what he was keen to do. Definitely not as magical.

I know what you mean by a surround, but what I’m thinking of didn’t have a surround. This is the sort of thing I remember - fire installed against a wall, no surround:

Thankyou, this is what we and all my friends had. Pretty difficult to hang a stocking!

My top tip for friends with new baby ortoddler is buy 2 of whatever stocking you are using for Xmas. One is filled before Christmas Eve whenever you have the house to yourself or child is asleep and then you just swap it out with the one hanging up on the night itself, ten second job with no stress. Unfortunately for me I did not think of this til DD was 6 and v attached to her particular stocking
