Amazon fire kids

So I'm looking to get my 7 year old a tablet for Christmas, and looking at the amazon fire kids ones. How have people found them? Is the main advantage of the kids version that you have parental controls and kid friendly apps? Can I do this with a general fire tablet (cheaper!). Is the amazon kids subscription necessary? At currently nearly £70 (I don't have prime) per year after the initial free year it makes the tablet very expensive over a couple of years..

Can anyone recommend any decent alternatives that don't require an ongoing subscription?

We really didnt get on with them. Ended up with ipads from CEX instead.
