Christmas

Something like old school Roses..

I love having a big tin of assorted sweets and chocolates to share during films over Christmas, but Roses and Quality Street are so awful now compared to when I was a teenager. I long for the cherry , the praline, the nougat. All the good flavours have gone, and everything left is over sugary and flavourless.
So, does anywhere make something similar to the good old days ? Pretty foiled wrappers and proper chocolate ?

I recently discovered Merci which are the nearest thing I’ve found to Neopolitans. Lindor and Ferrero rocher are pretty but there isn’t the flavour variety in there.

Merci ? I will Google. I loved Terry’s Neapolitans. Thanks for the tip.

Total agree. I miss the coffee ones too.

I agree with pp, Merci is nice chocolate. I live in Germany and it's everywhere here.

Mmm Baci. Will get some.
I got some Merci in my Tesco delivery, and I am now er…testing them. Yum. The coffee ones are good, all of them are tasty.

I hope someone comes up with a good suggestion, I really want a huge tin of quality street or roses from the eighties with all the wonderful flavours such as peanut cracknell, proper coffee and strawberry creams that were actually fondant and not the sickly phlegm looking stuff they use today. So fed up of cheap crap chocolate.

I completely agree, all the good flavours have gone from Roses and Quality Street, and they are all just too sugary with tasteless, waxy chocolate.

Oh realise they were flavours in Quality Street. I loved the Montelimar. Can’t remember Almond Charm, but I think I would if I saw the wrapper and shape.
Basically loved all the nut flavours ( plus the cherry cream ones in Roses ).

If you can get them, Sees Candids are a US brand where the chocolates and chews feel very special to eat.

M&S own brand are nice. Nothing makes up for the awfulness of Roses and QS now because they used to be so nice, but the M&S ones are nice in their own right and have the pretty wrappers.

I will have a look at M&S.
I agree it is depressing because they were very nice once upon a time, and are now tasteless waxy sugar. I had a Green Triangle a few days ago, it was even less tasty than last year !

I recommend Guilbert’s chocolates, they are UK-based and the fondants etc. remind me of what chocolate used to be like. I also love the stem ginger dark chocolate if anyone is into that. I just googled Roses, bit shocked to see they are all in little plastic wrappers now. Part of the excitement used to be the different coloured foils etc. Not surprising really when you see them piled up in the supermarket and so cheap, I bet the price hasn’t increased for decades, so quality has been cut.

I spat out the green triangle last week, it was so vile that I had to brush my teeth again.

They did ! I miss them .
I will look for the cherry ones mentioned above plus Guiberts.
I totally agree on spitting out the green triangle. The only one left that I even vaguely liked and it is like dog chocolates ( for those old enough to remember Good Boy Choc Drops) and yes I did once eat them.
