Hi, my DC is 9 and wants a phone for Christmas. She is very forgetful, so I’m thinking a smart watch she can use for calls.

Does anyone have any experience of watch vs phone? What brands do you recommend. I’m not very techie so find it quite a dull shop 🥱

A 9 year old doesn't need a smart phone.

I don’t think you can make calls on a smart watch. They operate thru a phone,

FlippertyGibberts · 31/10/2022 20:49

I think you might be able to actually, but I don't understand what's needed to make this possible.

Thanks both. I had looked online and found this, but not sure whether to trust the positive reviews as it’s their own site.

I like the fact it can do gps tracking and you can limit who can call/be called.

I know it's possible on some iWatches with some set-up, but that's the extent of my knowledge I'm afraid. I'm guessing that you'll need some kind of contract to support it...?

AuntieDickhead · 31/10/2022 21:54

I can make calls on my Samsung smart watch, but it's linked to my phone contract. So same phone number.

I'm not sure a 9 year old needs smart devices tbh.

DS got his first phone halfway through Y6, which seemed to work quite well.

It's one of those things that there's no going back from, so I'm glad we waited until then.

The age suitability aside, I know my husbands samsung watch requires a samsung device to set it up and update if you are set on getting a watch I'd wait for samsungs free watch with phone offers if you need an upgrade. A deal just finished today for buy a samsung phone, get a guaranteed trade in of £150 on any phone, free buds 2 and 12 months free Disney. I expect their free watch offers to start soon. But you need a phone to use it unless they do cellular which adds alpt to the price. How about a cheap smartphone, you can get them really cheap these days if you're not fussed on the brand/model.

What concerns do you have about a smartphones/watches? The watch I posted seems to have good controls, specifically made for children - but I might be falling for sales pitch?

• 3G Phone -make and receive calls to approved contacts
• Chat and SMS

• GPS tracker –See your child’s location any time
• Safe contacts -choose who can contact or be contacted by your child
• SOS Alerts –sends an alert to parents in case of emergencies
• Safe Zones – alerts you if your child leaves or arrives designated areas
• School Mode - turns Spacetalk into a simple wristwatch during class
• Parental app – manage their device easily from your smartphone using the Spacetalk app
• No social media – no open internet, no worries
• Step counter
• Reward Stars – set goals and reward good behaviour
• Find my Spacetalk - easily locate your device
• Torch
• Stopwatch
• Weather Updates
• Battery up to 1.5 hours talk time and up to 24 hours on standby. *Battery time depends on usage.

• Water resistant (IP54) - dustproof and splash proof, not swim-proof. *Please note that the certified splash, dust and water resistance levels of any device are not permanent conditions and may decrease over time

We live in a family estate, lots of kids out playing and she has very recently starting going to her friends who stays a few streets away. I’d just like to contact her, and vice versa - but think it needs to be a watch as she always leaves something behind.

Look at the Xplora play watch. Phone calls, voice messages and you can track location via the app

PineapplePear · 31/10/2022 22:18

Thanks, had a look and it looks good. Will add it to my watch list 😉
