Christmas Conundrum

Out shopping with my mum a few weeks ago, noticed a coat that I liked and tried it on but didn’t buy as can’t justify a new one at the moment!

Yesterday she asked me to find an email on her phone and I accidentally saw one confirming order of a similar coat - which I’m pretty convinced is my Christmas present.

HOWEVER - it’s similar but a completely different shape and length and is a size too small. She definitely hasn’t bought it for herself as it would be way too small for her.

I don’t like it nearly as much as the one I pointed out in the shop but I’m also really worried that it won’t fit and it will be too late to return it!

She loves giving ‘surprise’ presents so I’m not really sure what to do. She’ll be gutted if I keep it and don’t wear it and I wouldn’t be able to buy the one I did like as it’s too similar.

Obviously should add that it’s very kind of her and I really don’t want to hurt her feelings in any way.

Any ideas?

Could you say that you are going to buy it yourself this week as you like it so much?
she might fess up or return the one she bought quietly.
you could then say that you really really loved the coat when you tried it on again but might wait until the sales.

I agree with Trumpton. Tell her that you can’t stop thinking about the coat you tried on and you think you’re going to see if you can stretch to it, but you’ll need to check it comes in a size .... because you think you’ve gained a bit of weight.

Most shops do longer returns at this time of year 😊.

I would say that you bought the coat you like and you love it. Hopefully she will then return the one she bought

I would just be honest and say you came across the email. If she acknowledges it is for you, say it’s very kind but you don’t like it. Otherwise it’s a waste of her money if you don’t wear it.
