Only in the US

My DH has just informed me he is going to be going to the US for work before Christmas. I’m looking for inspiration of what he can bring back for myself and 3 DDs, 5, 8 & 10. I certain the girls won’t have a problem putting a list together for him but I’m not sure what I’d like. I’d like him to bring me something back I wouldn’t be able to get in the UK. It’s also my birthday.

So if you were to ask someone to bring you something back you could only get in the US, what would it be?

@ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS tell your DH NOT to bring back Hersheys chocolate as it's so vile it actually smells and tastes like vomit! He could bring Cheetos which are tasty American cheese puffs...

Other stuff such as Adidas runners and most sports wear are much cheaper than in the UK and also most perfumes are cheaper. Your DD's provably like all the celebrity branded lip balms and body sprays so they might be a good idea...

Good call on trainers, I didn’t think of sportswear, DDs wear a lot. I can’t stand Hersheys either.

I used to treat myself to the most wonderful costume jewellery from Macy's (normally in a sale at 70-% off). So if you trust his taste! But the last time I went to the states - NY 2018 - I went to Trader Joes (I didnt know it well from my time living out there but friends in the NE has always raved). I saw fabulous biscuits - the wafer ones - very reasonable. So I stuffed my suitcase with several bags. Literally 3 months later walked into our local Pound shop and there they were - same brand and all. So I echo PPs - pharmaceuticals in quantity! And not much else!!! My DC still love their tourist trash souvenirs but that is a little different.

Cob size trick saddle. I’ve got my request in for Canada though

I haven’t been to the US since Covid so my info might be out of date, but If you like homeware then definitely send your DH to Williams Sonoma (that’s if you can trust his taste or are able to get on their website to look at the range). Also send him to a CrackerBarrel country store. They have shops attached to their restaurants which are absolutely rammed with the most amazing kitsch. Their apple sauce is also to die for.
Would also recommend him joining up to the Sephora mailing list on your behalf so you can get the free joining gift as well as buying the monthly pick box.

Synders pretzel pieces! Not Christmassy but you can't buy them in the UK anymore than.

Soproudoflionesses · 19/10/2022 20:47

I bought some really cool Halloween bits in Trader Joe's last week so guessing their seasonal stuff is worth a look x

MissConductUS · 19/10/2022 20:47

Trader Joe's does fabulous cookies. These are my current favorites:

Also, Ghirardelli's chocolates.

Get your girls to check out a store called Justice. They do really fun and snazzy backpacks, sportswear and pjs. They also have a ton of fun stocking filler doodahs by the registers, eg: Bubbalicious lip balm/backpack accessories. I used to clean them out for my nieces when I'd come home and they were always a hit. You could even order everything online yourself and have it delivered to his hotel, same with all the places mentioned above except Trader Joe's.

Gymboree also has cute girls stuff, and if you like Mini Boden, Hanna Andersson is similar and is amazing quality. They are having a 40% off holiday sale RN. They have the absolute cutest matching PJ sets for Christmas. Mine wore theirs for years and years, they never faded/stretched etc.

When your DH shops for the OTC pain meds, suggest he find one of the big chain drugstores like CVS or Walgreens and buy the store brand. They are just as good as the name brands and about half the price.

BiddyPop · 20/10/2022 13:16

In our house, apart from melatonin and pain meds, we also have requests for the sachets of lemonade powder (regular and pink/raspberry), although DD has moved on to Gatorade sachets in more recent years, especially the 0 sugar ones.

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 20/10/2022 13:29

Thanks @MissConductUS and @BiddyPop.

thanks everyone else too, got a big list for him now, let’s home he has room to bring it all back xx

I want to add Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix. It's incredibly cheap per packer and makes about 9 reasonably sized muffins.

Also Jelly Belly jelly beans, macadamia nuts, chili roasted pistachios, and he should look for a huge vatriety of Tabasco style sauces in Austin.

They sell Justice stuff in Walmart. It might be a novelty in the UK, but not so much in the US.
But Hanna Andersson is fab.

If your DH goes looking for trainers for the DCs, make sure he understands that American sizes and UK sizes are not the same. He will need to refer to an online size translator.

Aria999 · 24/10/2022 02:54

I live in the US now and I can't think of anything I wouldn't rather buy in the uk 😳

Marmighty · 24/10/2022 03:04

I came to be a grinch and say with the exchange rate and general quality of products there is very little I'd recommend buying in the US that you couldn't get in the UK. But Hanna Anderrsson is fab and good quality for e.g. family Xmas pyjamas and they don't ship internationally

Do some of your shopping on Amazon.com and Walmart. 50,000iu vit D3, melatonin, night time cough syrup and pain relief. Maple syrup, wasabi almond nuts, Bath and Body works sprays and shower gels etc.

I hope the 50,000 iu was a typo. 5,000iu of D3 is the highest I've seen over the counter. Vitamin D can be toxic in excessively high doses.

Thanks

I considered the American girl dolls, my older 2 liked the OG ones and we have one AG doll, all were put in the attic this week though as not been played with in ages.

kids watch a lot of YouTube so was thinking American sweets & junk food could be ok as a treat. Also thinking merch from some of their favourite channels sniper wolf, Rebecca Zamarlo, Chad wild clay….They love their Beanie Boos so I suppose US ones we can’t get here.

im the type of person who struggles justifying spending £12 on a new top. But, DH treat himself to a very expensive toy this month, £500, so I’m thinking I could do with something nice too. What jewellery like over there with cost? I always thought it was cheaper but if it’s not I will leave it.

I will definitely ask him to look out for Christmas decorations for me.

He will be there 7 days and based in Austin.

Austin is fab
Send him to Bangers for sausages and beer
If he has a car then Buckees is famous and they have very kind of sweet imaginable.

Austin is the home of Yeti - they have a shop with bar and generally great stuff.
