Best Hot Chocolate (but a simple one)

Hi there,

I'm not in the market for a velvetiser, or that (lovely) Spanish hot chocolate that you heat and stir for ages like a chocolate custard.

I'm just looking for a great chocolate powder, that I can stir into hot milk - something delicious, but easy to make, nicely packaged, and giftable.

Thanks in advance!

Oops, for a cheaper alternative Fry's is lovely and I've tried loads

gogohmm · 17/10/2022 16:01

I have Lidl cocoa powder

CornishTin · 17/10/2022 16:03

Green and Black’s

I'm fussy with hot chocolate and the best I have had was my own hot chocolate truffles you melt into hot milk. The Dutch style blocks never worked as it didn't melt properly. Mine are made from chocolate gnashe (chcolate and cream) coated in chocolate. These melt much more easily and the cream adds richness. I make them most years as xmas gifts packaged in cellophane with gold/silver sprinkles

I love a Velvetiser hot chocolate but if it's powder you're after then I highly rate Whittards too. Love the variety of flavours and tastes luxurious. The tubs look lovely to gift and you can buy a tin with a variety of different flavoured sachets too.

Oh I forgot about Pip's hot chocolate. He does vegan and normal versions, different flavours, coins and crumbled bits. pipsformilk.co.uk/

You can also buy them on Amazon.

He's a lovely chap and locally sources what he can as well as often using testers from his FB fans. His hot chocolate is stocked in a few cafes in Cardiff, and in the Welsh Shop. The dark mint is my favourite, like melted After Eights. I bought a bag of the crumbled bits and ate some of it without making it into hot chocolate. It was very good.

Chocolate flakes that you stir in are really nice. I had some from the highland chocolatier as a gift and they were popular with children and adults.Came in black metal tins with gold lettering.

I love this one, yes it's Spanish but you just add it to hot milk. I microwave the milk and stir it in

I agree with Twinnings. It's lovely.

Ladyofthepeonies · 19/10/2022 17:34

Twinnings yum

LoopyGremlin · 19/10/2022 17:40

My son has had so many brands of hot chocolate- HC, Lindt, Green and Blacks, Costa- but will only drink Twinings. We still have full tubs of all the ones mentioned above that he refuses to drink 😫

REP22 · 19/10/2022 17:47

Green and Black's Organic is my favourite. I prefer it even to Charbonnel and Walker, or any of the others.

Chillywilly93 · 20/10/2022 21:25

giftable, simple and delicious for me is Bourneville. It's easy to make, tastes really good and is slightly fancier than your typical hot chocolate. Definitely my go to, get it from Sainsbury's most weeks

Green and Black’s.
Not too sweet or bitter like a cocoa.

CountryMouse22 · 01/11/2022 18:45

M&S Fairtrade Hot Chocolate powder. I bought it thinking you add it to hot water but it's added hot hot milk and it's delicious!

NameChangeForARaisin · 01/11/2022 18:53

Green and Blacks.

Sakura03 · 01/11/2022 22:51

I’m not keen on Charbonell and Walker but I really love the classic 70% hot chocolate from Hotel Chocolat. If it’s just for myself I prefer a large mug of hot cocoa.

NewNormalLife · 01/11/2022 22:57

Definitely Twinnings.

I'm always disappointed with the ones you have to warm milk and stir in flakes of chocolate.

IWantAdventureInTheGreatWideSomewhere · 01/11/2022 23:03

Nothing beats cadburys for me. I have simple tastes :)

GlomOfNit · 02/11/2022 00:24

I either get Charbonel et Walker or Sloanes (I tell a lie, it was DH who bought that for me. I think I prefer C&W slightly though).

but recently I've discovered that Oatley Deluxe Chocolate Milk (it's from the fridge not off the supermarket shelf) is really nice, very creamy and heats up beautifully! I get it for an instant hot chocolate fix.

kateandme · 02/11/2022 02:49

Also, recommend Knoops (disclaimer, I work for them!) We have 11 different % chocolates in flake form (from 28% White up to 100% Extra dark), we sell a Shaker as described above, which is a great value way to make hot chocolate at home - but we also have a few different makers by Lavazza, Bialetti and Smeg.
