To ask about Christmas magazines

I know I am being U really, because:
a. it is only October so weeks yet until Christmas, and
b. those glossy Christmas magazines are always a load of rubbish and a total waste of money.

However, the same thing happens every year. I see the magazines towards the end of September and I sternly tell myself it is far too early and they are really not worth it anyway. Then as Autumn creeps on they keep grabbing my attention from the magazine stands until finally I weaken and buy one. And it turns out to be the glossy pile of crap I knew it would be really but couldn't resist.

So, given IABU to even contemplate frittering money away on one of these, but knowing I probably will at some point, can I ask anyone who has already indulged which one might be the least worst this year?

I am not in the least interested in fashion tips to sparkle at the Christmas party, but I do like making things and cooking and baking and any interesting or novel ideas for decorations.

Style At Home magazine is cheap and cheerful, satisfies the Christmas mag urge without breaking the bank. Mainly interior design but I'm sure it has a cookery/recipe section (haven't bought it for a while though)

Such a shame that charity shops found us have stopped taking magazines, Covid?? Country Living for me, used to love GH but all got a bit samey, same personalities, how I started my own business at 50 etc but might have a look at the Christmas one

This year's GH is fab. I can't really put my finger on why, it's just a really good edition this year. I also got the Country Living Christmas, for the first time, and it's rubbish.

Country living is the same with the monthly issue , full of promise with lovely photos but there's zero to read that interests me and I live in the country . It's all a bit twee and I'm not sure who it's aimed at really

Sorry if it’s already been mentioned but if you get the BorrowBox app ( you just need to be a member of your local library) there is a magazine section so you can indulge in festive reading for free. 😊

Where is it on the app? I can't find it so maybe my library doesn't have it...

Hi,
It’s just at the bottom where it says my loans, audiobooks, ebooks and then e magazines. It’s a fairly recent thing on my app so maybe eventually all councils will add it. . Happy reading. 😊

I’m with you on this, I’ve always thought Country Living was aimed at people who either:

  1. don’t live in the country, but wished they did
OR
  1. have weekend homes in the country (and possibly staff!)

Its certainly nothing like living in the countryside round here!

Thanks. Looks like mine hasn't got it yet. Hopefully they'll add it. I agree about Country Living but tbh I feel the same about most magazines. I've never had a magazine lifestyle and I've never needed a sparkly Christmas party outfit. 😂

I used to like the Red and Marie Claire Christmas mags. I don’t think I saw them last year.

My Christmas socialising consists of pub drinks and cafe brunches rather than sparkly parties, so the fashion magazines don’t interest me. But I do like makeup.

pinkksugarmouse · 06/11/2022 19:53

The only magazines I buy regularly are New Statesman and The Private Eye so I don’t think I can help here except to say surely you can just borrow books on Christmas cooking and decorating from the Library for free? That would be my first port of call.

I'm bumping this thread up
I bout the Good Housekeeping Christmas edition in Nov ( little girl, Christmas Tree , nice dog on the cover )
But I've noticed a Christmas/New Year edition with Camilla, Queen Consort on the front cover
Not January edition.

Anyne seen this /bought this ?
Is it very focused on the Royal Family ? Maybe Camilla was guest editor ?

BaconAndAvocado · 16/12/2022 07:39

70isaLimitNotaTarget no, there’s all that much about Camilla and quite a bit of Christmassy stuff.
