Gravitrax - age?

Thinking ahead to DS birthday, he will be 5. He has a fairly cheapy marble run which he likes but you only have to look at it and falls over. The galt one seems to have good reviews but I also came across the gravitrax which might last a bit longer, but is 5 too young? He is ok with Lego etc?

Gravitrax is quite unstable too. You can't move it once it's set up and you need a steady hand. A 5 yo with good balance and hand/ eye co-ordination would be fine but better for years 8+ imo

For a 5yo used to Lego gravitrax is probably a good shout -my ds used it a lot at that age.

Id leave it another year.
Next Christmas when he's nearer 6 is probably better bet.

Is also recommend leaving it at least another year and getting a good galt marble run instead. I got the gravitrax starter set for ds last year (he was 7 that Nov) and he got lots of expansion sets this year at 8yrs. It can be fiddly and he needed help even this year to be shown how couple of the more complicated add ons worked. He is very good at Lego been building solo following instructions since 4 and also did difficult jigsaws (just to show his brain def works on that methodical putting things together way) and I’d still say 6+ for gravitrax with help to build. Of course if he’s happy for adult to build most of it then just likes doing the marbles this year would be fine. My 4yr old enjoys it from that point of view.

It is a brilliant toy though and I can see DS using when older too as interesting with more complex designs etc.

No idea about the gravitrax one but the galt ones are brilliant and have fab add ons too.

Our 8, nearly 9 year old got Gravitrax for Christmas. He loves it and finds it quite easy, but our 6 year old isn't getting on with it. He plays really well with the House of Marbles run (& is a huge Lego fan), so I would think the Galt one would probably be a better step.

Thanks everybody, I will look out for a galt one and give gravitrax a couple of years.

I'd agree with previous posters - my kids have both the Galt marble run and gravitrax. The 9 year old loves gravitrax, it's a bit complicated for the 6 year old. To be honest, I find the instructions quite complicated to follow myself sometimes but that might just be me! Grin
