Gravy is my nemesis

Tried the JO get ahead gravy this year. What a bloody faff and felt like such a waste of chicken wings. Didn't like it either too thick.

What is your fool proof gravy recipe?

Using veg water is IMO too much of a last minute faff, plus veg need to go straight to the table.

I make it in the roasting tin after taking the chicken or other joint out to rest. Stir a little flour into the juices, scrape all the bits into it, cook a couple of minutes. Then add a mugful or so of Bisto powder (not granules) made up with water, one heaped teaspoon to a mug, bring all to boil, simmer a minute or two, taste, add half a stock cube if needed, usually not.
Red wine etc. optional.

Then pour from roasting tin into a small saucepan, ready to reheat, roasting tin out of the way into the dishwasher, sorted.

I hate making gravy, even with granules I find it difficult to get the correct consistency. This year I bought a tub of ready made Turkey gravy from Morrison’s (The Best range), which was lovely. Definitely will buy again.

I do make a good gravy... but today, I'm under the weather and cooked mash with bisto and I have to say it was actually pretty good!! I normally give it the kids for sausages or what ever

Caramellatteplease · 30/12/2021 19:44

Use bisto... claim you made it from scratch

Life is too short. Use the bisto.

@MollysDolly

Have done the Jamie Oliver gravy, wanting to find a super gravy for special occasions. Gross. So much faff for awful gravy.

We are real foodies. And I'm (puffs chest out) an accomplished cook. However, I'm shite at gravy. I mean I can make one. We can all make one of sorts. I just can't make a fantastic one.

I'm wondering if the people who think the Jamie Oliver one is amazing, are the same people who think the M&S ones are amazing...

Anyhoo

Going to try the James Martin one tomorrow. It's the one that goes with his "grannies toad in the hole". There are also two types of gravy (which this one appears to be a combo of) that he does, one called "mums gravy" and one called "restaurant gravy." These have all sorts in, from red wine to Marmite and Bovril, so god only knows how it will transpire....if good, will report back.

This is me too. I am known as a good cook normally. Just can't make a gravy that I think is good. I am hoping it's something I will crack eventually like cooking rice.

Let me know how the James Martin gravy goes.

I spent years making proper gravy but now I use the Asda Extra special chicken gravy granules and chuck some juices and a bit of wine or Sherry in.
I first did it after a cock up one Chris and no one noticed.

@Rainbowshit

Made it. Not good. Not good at all. Really strong, and not in a flavoursome way. Overbearing marmite.
