Shop bought bread sauce

Did anyone have a really good ready made bread sauce this year? Our M&S one had a lovely flavour but was the wrong consistency (far too runny).

We had a fresh one from Morrisons- went down very well!

Rainbowshit · 27/12/2021 19:49

Bread sauce is so easy to make, and far superior to shop bought. I make in advance and freeze using delias recipe.

Ostryga · 27/12/2021 19:52

Good old packet mix here.

I have made bread sauce in the past, and it is fab. But life is too short to judge a bread sauce ‘superior’ 🤣

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/12/2021 19:54

I couldn’t find any packet mix, for a last minutes request from an overseas visitor, but made some. It was dead easy and very nice.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 27/12/2021 19:55

I usually make it myself but this year I used packet mix and found it needed twice as many packets as the recipe suggested - it would have been way too runny otherwise.
Like bread gruel.

I added a bit of nutmeg and it was pretty nice

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 27/12/2021 19:57

I'm odd in that I prefer my bread sauce cold and scoopable - so packet mix is best as far as I'm concerned

userxx · 27/12/2021 19:58

The Aldi one is lovely.

WhatIsThisPlease · 27/12/2021 20:07

Another vote for the Delia recipe here. It's a doddle to make and you can do it the day before. Or even a few weeks before if you freeze it.

Tastes delicious and you can choose your own consistency!

takenforgrantednana · 27/12/2021 20:17

never had the stuff and never really appealed to me

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/12/2021 21:04

I froze some leftover bread-maker white bread and did the milk ( unsweetened soya) with half an onion, cloves, peppercorns in the morning .
Added some nutmeg - delicious

CrumpledCrumpet · 27/12/2021 21:49

It’s so insanely easy to make I can’t understand why you’d buy a packet.

Chewbecca · 27/12/2021 22:02

We had M&S (as always) and the eaters said it was runny / watery so no recs but it wasn’t just you.

I refuse to make it as I don’t eat it & frankly, do enough! The eaters are welcome to,

AuntieStella · 27/12/2021 22:04

Pimped packet mix

Because the number of times I have tried and failed to make bread sauce from scratch is now a family joke

madamegazelle1 · 27/12/2021 22:48

Definitely the Aldi one!

Scout2016 · 28/12/2021 19:46

Another vote for Aldi's.

SpanielsAreMyLife · 28/12/2021 19:49

My Nan always heated the milk then let it steep for a while with a whole onion and some cloves in, then strain and pop in some fresh breadcrumbs. I used a very crusty sourdough loaf and it was heaven.

Not adverse to packets but I find it really hard to get the consistency right with them... I like to be able to spoon it cold and use in sandwiches.

Tangerine32 · 28/12/2021 20:57

I tried a fresh Marks and Spencer’s one this year which was disgusting and a Morrisons’s Best fresh one which was much nicer (though still not as nice as the packet mixes).

Palavah · 28/12/2021 21:04

@CrumpledCrumpet

Because you were both recovering from covid so didn't have the time or energy to do so? Because I'm the only one who eats it and we would never have got through the leftovers?

OP, I had to compromise on having bread sauce so i put a few cloves in the shop-bought Cauliflower cheese and it worked plenty well enough for me.

FrenchyQ · 28/12/2021 21:14

I used Sainsbury's the best packet mix ..it was not nice. I usually make my own but didn't have time this year.

MrsPnut · 28/12/2021 21:20

Making bread sauce is easier than peeling veg, you can adjust for your required consistency and it freezes.

Milk, tear stale bread into it, mix and heat.

I do infuse my milk before with onion, bay, cloves, mace and peppercorns but it isn’t essential.

I do season my bread sauce with salt, pepper and nutmeg but again it’s a choice. I also add a splash of cream and a knob of butter when it’s resting.

Blueberrycreampie · 28/12/2021 23:48

Got Waitrose's - it was ok but very thick and a bit tasteless even though I added a few cloves.

KittyFilter · 29/12/2021 23:30

Thank you everyone, Aldi seems to be mentioned a few times.

In answer to why not make it yourself? Mostly because I just couldn't be arsed. Isn't that the point of ready made? For those times when you can't be arsed to make even the simplest of items (I'll have to take your word for it). Besides which I had decided against bread sauce as really I'm the only fan but at the last minute I thought fuck it, I'm getting it. It was better cold, it thickened up and was great in a sandwich.

The Aldi one goes on sale around the 19th of December, you'll find it near the turkeys with the fresh cranberry sauce.

NCnora · 19/12/2024 08:54

@Rainbowshit @WhatIsThisPlease is it as nice if you freeze it?

Yes. You just freeze it without the cream and add that when you heat it up.
