I had a lovely beef dinner with all the trimmings but I was very meh about it this year I always find a roast overrated on Xmas day and I don't know why!
Next year I'm going to have seafood fuck it

I’m having a steak next year, with dolphin nose potatoes and a side salad.

SilverHairedCat · 26/12/2021 11:23

Husband talked about going out for dinner next year but one of us would have to stay sober as taxis are non existent round here.

I suggested I make a curry feast on Christmas Eve. I still think that's what will do!

SlowBoiledFrog · 26/12/2021 11:25

We stopped a few years ago. Always have a proper turkey dinner at some point between Xmas and NY but no longer on Christmas day. Honestly it's the best thing we've done, no stress, no timings, no worry.

We don't have a traditional meal, we knocked it on the head about eight years ago.

We do have some traditional elements but they come and go.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 26/12/2021 11:44

I like the sound of dolphin nose potatoes Grin

That sounds very exotic! 😅

I definitely want the recipe for dolphin nose potatoes!

We didn’t bother this year. I’d cooked our favourite Christmas bits (Turkey crown, gammon, roast potatoes, pigs in blankets and stuffing balls) beforehand then just heated them up and plonked on the table with buffet food. Kids were delighted and ate in front of the TV watching Home Alone. No stress and very chilled. They said it was the best dinner ever.

We've had curry for the last 8 years. I don't think I could go back to a traditional Christmas dinner now (we do have one, just not on Christmas day!)

BlueJag · 26/12/2021 12:05

We had duck it was delicious. Roast potatoes but next year I'll make dolphin nose potatoes for sure 😁😁😁

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/12/2021 12:20

No I love it. We do split up the work btwn a few people, also do Turkey crown which isn’t as nice but so much less work.

However, I’m also going to add dolphin nose potatoes next year 🐬

whinetime89 · 26/12/2021 13:23

I want some dolphin nose potato's 🤣

I am in Australia and the weather was 43 degrees.... no roast here! We had prawns, crayfish, octopus salad, a few other salads and rolled Turkey Breast... it was divine

Lilyargin · 26/12/2021 13:28

We had a seafood feast. Oysters, lobsters, giant prawns, mussels, scallops, veg. It was delicious, easier to prepare and not as filling (hate feeling stuffed).
It was way better!

MyCatHatesPCRTests · 26/12/2021 13:50

I also made this decision as the kids are too young to appreciate it and it’s just too much work for four of us. The kids were also in no mood to eat it either yesterday! If we’re at home again just us I’m doing some sort of M&S buffet.

MintyGreenDream · 26/12/2021 14:07

@MintyGreenDream. OMG you took the words right out of my mouth. I am so with you on this one. I told my husband this morning that I have just cooked my 40th and last traditional xmas dinner. I dont even like turkey that much! I have just done it to please everyone else. From the day I got married I have made xmas dinner for parents, then my own family and now grandkids às well. I love them all and enjoy spending christmas together and love having them all around the table on xmas day, but I am so fed up with traditional xmas dinner. I will cook what I want next year.

MintyGreenDream · 26/12/2021 14:50

We did tapas this year, everything done in less that an hour. Everyone got something they enjoyed and it was so nice and relaxing. Same with desert, kids had their favourite ice creams, and we did a selection of nibbles, meringue kisses, yummy gourmet chocolate and pop corn bits, candy floss, berries, brandy snaps, fresh cream, chocolate matchsticks and cupcakes the kids backed Christmas Eve, all served in a Christmas sleigh. So easy and so yummy.

edgeware · 26/12/2021 18:46

Neither of us like roast. Toddler is fussy. This year we had pizza and leftover Chinese food on a lovely fancy Christmas set table.

LoannaJumley · 26/12/2021 18:57

We never have a roast on Christmas Day, lunch is a buffet which people can pick at as and when they please.

Thanks for the idea of dolphin nose potatoes,I've got a wretched cold and feel a bit shit but that's made me laugh, a lot.

Jinglemychristmasbells · 26/12/2021 19:03

We won't be bothering with a roast either way too much food has been wasted. Me and DH are finishing the lamb off now it hardly got touched yesterday. The kids didn't eat any of the roast one had macaroni cheese and the other had nuggets and waffles. I knew they wouldn't eat the roast but hoped they would both try some.

actiongirl1978 · 26/12/2021 19:05

We had fillet of beef (20 mins in the oven then rest 15mins) plus M&S goose fat chips, their creamed spinach. Took 50 mins start to finish.

I cooked 12 turkeys in a row and lockdown proved the catalyst to change last year. Never going back now.
