How could you possibly know what people will want a whole year later? With adults it’s slightly easier, but surely their preferences change too? I really don’t understand it with children though as how could you know what they’ll be in to or like? I know it’s cheaper but the whole concept just confuses me. Please help me understand Confused

I don't think most people buying in January are doing their entire Christmas shopping, I do buy early but it would be for generic stuff. Wrapping paper, Christmas cards, gift bags, crackers, possibly a Christmas pudding as they keep, Christmas jumpers or PJs in the next age up for the DC etc.

If I see generic gifts too on offer throughout the year I often will buy them. For children it may be a craft set, for my DM a jigsaw as she loves them, for my DF he likes a specific wine so if I see it on offer I'll pick it up. I leave buying 'main' presents until September/October time and then start looking in earnest.
