I bought
Fifty Sounds by Polly Barton for myself, but I think it would make a lovely gift, it's a beautifully produced book as well as being fascinating. It's a memoir of the author's time in Japan as a young woman. It's organised around the fifty sounds of the title, each of which is an idea or concept that illustrates her experience in the country. She went on to a career in translation, and her thoughts about language in relation to culture are fascinating, without making it a heavy read.
Philosophy /science - I was given Being You by Anil Seth as a birthday present, it explores the nature of conciousness. Not a light read (!) but really interesting.
Also on the science (but with a philosophical bent) Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake is one of my books of the year, it's about fungi and the way they literally shape the world and ourselves.
Sex Robots and Vegan Meat is a great read, it's the sort of thing I'd love as a Christmas gift, thought provoking but also entertaining. Futurology looking at current trends in technology (including sex robots & vegan meat as per the title).
