Whatever happened to mesh Christmas stockings?

Not the Ann Summers kind. The ones that were like a selection box, full of chocolate bars. Like the ones in this picture. I've just realised I haven't seen one since about 1989. Where did they go? When did they stop making them and why must they stop making all the things that were brilliant in the 80s?

Off topic (see what I did there?) but wasn't Opal Fruits a much better name than Starburst

Akire · 09/12/2021 22:45

Yes loved these! Always felt like a massive treat having that much chocolate to choose from. The cardboard ones are not the same at all

irishfarmer · 09/12/2021 22:48

I remember these, have to have still been going in the 90s.

The 3 for €5 cardboard ones have sweet f.a. in them! It's a box and a mouthful of chocolate.

CactusLemonSpice · 09/12/2021 23:06

What's happened to the square Christmas tree chocolates!!!

Yes! So much better. Say opal fruits and I want sweets, starburst just meh
SimpsonsXmasBoogie · 09/12/2021 23:35

I used to get these in the early 90s.

Although you are right about them disappearing not long after. I haven't seen one since I was very young.

I always had to get my nan to open it with scissors. I never managed it on my own. They were a right fucker to open for a small child!

Waterfallgirl · 09/12/2021 23:40

Deffo saw a stocking shaped something in b&m today with chocolate bars. Not sure if they had mesh though. I’ll have to go back tomorrow!

MadMadMadamMim · 09/12/2021 23:43

@elQuintoConyo.

Fabulous idea! I'm going to do that this year.

NalPolishRemover · 09/12/2021 23:51

I'm a 70s/ 80s child & I always had one of these.

I also got a similar one once that was filled with amazing stuff- magic tricks, fake nails etc a repackaged Christmas stocking & I LOVED it & all its littke trinkets

Only ever got it one year though

foxgoosefinch · 10/12/2021 00:19

I loved these - always had one alongside my main stocking. My mum (usually a health food nut the rest of the year) would let us eat the chocolate bars for breakfast. Good times 😂

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 10/12/2021 01:03

No idea but I loved those!

JustJoinedRightNow · 10/12/2021 04:31

We still have these in Australia but they are a plastic stocking, with a cardboard backing. We have Cadbury ones, trolli ones and wiz fizz ones.

GoodnightGrandma · 10/12/2021 05:23

Opal Fruits - made to make your mouth water !
Does Starburst even have a song that people will still be singing in 40 years time, I doubt it 🙄

LaurenKelsey · 10/12/2021 05:45

They sell up filled mesh stockings on Amazon.

LaurenKelsey · 10/12/2021 05:46

*unfilled mesh stockings

Thanks OP I am aching for the 80s and 90s lately, all nostalgic stuff greatly appreciated!

Same. I don't know if it's as a result of Covid and all the restrictions and not being able to see family for so long, but I have a terrible hankering for the Christmas of my childhood and early teens. I've wasted countless hours googling everything from mesh Christmas stockings to the exact make and model of the boombox I got when I was about 12 and the Fashion Wheel and My Little Pony grooming parlour. I have a desperate longing for flammable foil garlands and all things tacky. Although not my mum's sherry trifle (boak) or cardboard turkey, bless her.

I’ve still got mine!

I still love that pony as much now, as I did when I was 9 years old!

elQuintoConyo · 12/12/2021 09:54

You're welcome for the make-your-own idea. I love being able to make proper-sized stuff and fill it with what I/the recipient likes.

I still have my My Little Pony grooming parlour - seen here on top of my wardrobe. I'm still delighted that my 10yo DS asks to play with it and I can brush their tails again Grin

And I had Fashion Plates. Still very groovy. And Fuzzy Felt, when I was a little bit younger. My sister got a Homepride Fred cooking set - still has it in her kitchen. We're late-40s.

Nostalgia is warm, happy place that gives you the fuzzies - who wouldn't like to visit?

FAQs · 12/12/2021 10:00

@elQuintoConyo you need to get thy self on Etsy!

elQuintoConyo · 12/12/2021 22:24

I couldn't sell anything on Etsy, they wouldn't pay my prices!

I've just finished this cross stitch wolf for my son's room, it took a week! Around full time work, his birthday, and a break to make 4 small cross stitch things for DH Grin

You can still get a chocolate bar stocking but it is made from cardboard.
