Tablet for a 14yo - help!

DS is proving singularly useless at working out which tablet he wants (which we are organising from ILs).

He has a Huawei that he's been v happy with but it's nearly 3 years old and he dropped it recently... We could get him another Huawei but I'm a bit concerned over the no-Google-play/China stuff and whether that might become even more of an issue?

My impression from reading tech reviews, etc is that at the £250-£300 mark we'd be best to spend the wee bit extra and get him a basic iPad - but he's always had android and seems reluctant to switch.

He uses it mainly for youtube, some art stuff and "light" gaming - anyone got any views on what we'd be best with? His current one has 3GB of RAM and 32GM storage so would want a step up from that preferably. I'm really aware that we could end up with no choices if we don't get organised soon!

My ds ( and i) have Samsung Galaxy tablets

Sturmundcalm · 28/11/2021 16:36

thanks - did have a samsung one in a basket at one point but it went out of stock! also wasn't totally sure whether it was the best value for money based on reviews, but does seem "straightforward"

My youngest and reach have Lenovo 8inch tablets. They do the job. However. One of his sisters has an iPad and, frankly, if your son will use it and you can afford it, I would go for the ipad. Best spec you can afford and buy the Apple pencil to go with it.

ImJustNotMeAnymore · 28/11/2021 17:03

That should have said and I each. Not reach.

Sturmundcalm · 28/11/2021 17:13

interesting cause there is a Lenovo that's a good deal but I'm worried that it just won't be good enough for what he does. and we already have a pencil to go with DH's iPad!! might investigate if there's anywhere we can actually buy one before I push it too hard with him though ;-)

Dd2 has a Samsung s6 lite and I have a Samsung s5, I don't really know the difference between them but we both like them more than the cheaper Lenovo and Acer ones that we used to have.

They seem more responsive and smoother with great sound and graphics for nextfkix/YouTube etc

I used to have an ipad btw and don't think it's worth the extra ££££ over the Samsung.

dementedpixie · 28/11/2021 17:28

I know where I am with samsung. I had an ipad before but went back to Samsung

Sturmundcalm · 28/11/2021 17:32

thanks - although as far as I can see at the moment Samsung are pretty much the same/slightly dearer than the iPad for an equivalent? good to hear folk are happy with them though as they do seem the safest android option

I've had a Samsung Galaxy for years and it still works like new, despite heavy use by my DC.

JustLikea · 30/11/2021 07:00

My DS 15 was weirdly specific about what he wanted in a laptop and was very anti an apple one although he has an iPad and iPhone

So go along with his request even though an iPad makes more sense.

I think you’re either an Apple person or an Android person. Unfortunately, thanks to DH, we’re Apple people but if your DS isn’t, I’d go for a Samsung.
