Child's December birthday

Just wanted some ideas...
If your child's birthday was in the first week and a half of December...
Would you wait to put the tree up until after their birthday, or not?

It's her first birthday this year, and as she gets older, part of me feels I should keep Xmas and her birthday separate.
(but I'm also desperate to enjoy my Xmas. Decs too!)

My daughters birthday is on the 12th and so is my little brothers, we always put the tree up the day after on the 13th until they were old enough to ask what they wanted. This year the tree is going up before her birthday. (My little brother used to love the tree up for his birthday too).

DD is on the 13th and I used to wait as I didn't want Christmas to overshadow her birthday. Mine is on the 26th and I used to either get forgotten or one present for both (unles my DM got there first) but as she got older she asked for Christmas to start on or around her birthday as she loves Christmas so we made the tradition of putting the tree up on her birthday. We don't know as she's moved out and her younger sister is in charge of the tree and would have it up by now if I would let her 😀

My BIL is 23rd December.

General rules... no cards displayed until 24th, (so his birthday cards could be displayed) no Christmas wrapping on birthday presents and no joint presents unless massive (like when DH gave him his old car!), no Christmas outings on the 23rd.
The tree was up though.

December one here as well:
Our tree always came up just before Christmas but we had other decorations up, did Christmas things and it didn't bother me because my mum made sure my birthday itself was absolutely un-Christmassy.

So, the cake and food I wanted (Birtday person was in charge of the meal for the day), not whatever Christmas related treats we already had/baked.
A party with nothing Christmas thrown in, no games, no prizes, no songs about Christmas.
Gifts wrapped in normal paper, not Christmas ones

My poor mum had two children back to back beginning of December but because she has a 2nd Jan birthday which was always overshadowed with the 12th day of Christmas period she was determind to make it up to us.

DD is a few days before Xmas - the tree is up usually at her request, but I have special sparkly birthday decorations that go up just for her to try and differentiate. I don't feel properly Christmassy until her birthday is over!

Thanks everyone.. Absolutely intend to make her day absolutely all Birthday!
Nothing at all Christmassey.
I can't believe people would give Xmas type Presents for a December birthday.. joint Xmas birthday presents, or Xmas wrapping!
Her birthday is the 8th, I think I'll put tree up next weekend 3rd/4th! 🎄
Can ask her what she prefers when she gets older.

When DS was little Christmas started after his birthday on 6th December. Now he's older he wants all the decorations up before so that's what we do!

Magissa · 29/11/2021 09:32

Dd birthday on Christmas Eve. We keep a wall free for bday cards and decorations.

Magissa · 29/11/2021 09:33

Pressed too soon! So yes decorations and tree up but one wall is the birthday wall.

My birthday is very close to Christmas and I love having the tree up. My ds has a birthday this week and we always waited until after when he was younger but now he is older he is desperate to have it up before.

Blablabla1984 · 29/11/2021 09:45

My DS's birthday is on the 17th and the first few years we waited to decorate as we thought we shouldn't "mess up" his birthday. But as he started to understand things, he started asking why everyone's house is decorated except ours. I said because we should celebrate your birthday first and he said nooo, when we put the decorations up that means my birthday is closer so we need to decorate.

Since then we've been decorating in the beginning of Dec. And when you think about it, you are born when you are born. He was born in Dec when it happens to be Christmas but that DOESN'T mean that you can't celebrate both. So I'd say go for it, she'll love the twinkly lights :)

DS' is next week. When he was around 5 we asked if he wanted the tree up before his birthday and he said yes, so up it goes.

Going up this weekend.

He has separate gifts, a cake etc. Then 2 weeks later all over again Grin
