John Lewis exchange

I’ll start by saying this is nothing to do with the JL code glitch!!
Short version - does anyone know if you exchange an item bought online from JL do you get an email telling you about the exchange?

Reason I’m asking - my MIL is a very tricky character but we’re all rubbing along fine at the moment. Yesterday she very kindly gave my DC some advent calendars, very unexpected but lovely surprise. She hasn’t bought them any before in the last 10 years. My DS was out at football yesterday so he didn’t open his until she had gone, but we have a problem as she has given him a Lego Star Wars calendar that we have already bought (he doesn’t know yet, we were going to present them on 1st Dec). I bought the calendars months ago in person don’t have the receipts etc. MIL said she ordered them online from John Lewis as she told a story about collecting them from Waitrose a few weeks ago. So now I’m wondering if I go to John Lewis, explain what has happened whether they can look up her order (I have her email and address) would they be able to exchange it for something else, and if so would she get notification of the return via email?
She would not take kindly to her gift being exchanged even if DH called her to explain and we don’t want to rock the boat as we are due to have them to ours for Christmas, but I would rather they fell out that way than if she found out via a JL exchange notification email! Worst case is I give away the one we bought, but then we have to spend more money getting DS another one as his siblings will now have 2 each.
I know this sounds ridiculous and it is, in my family I’d have just rung my Mum and explained, no issue no drama, but we can see the fallout coming with MIL about how she was just doing a nice thing, DS must be ungrateful if he can’t have 2 of the same, we should have told her what we had already bought, etc etc.

Oh man, I had this exact issue a while ago. JL are totally inflexible and it will be near impossible to exchange without her knowing. I did manage it because mine was very clearly a gift (gift receipt and message), but it took two trips to store, umpteen emails, and a couple of long online chats. The advice from JL online was to return to store, and even though I had this advice in multiple emails I still had to have a standup row with JL. If you have the delivery note and want to be belligerent you might get lucky. Otherwise, are they selling on eBay? Sometimes they can be quite sought after.

If you act today, you’ll sell one. They are sold out. Stick it on market place on Facebook. Somewhere you can tell today or tomorrow. eBay will take too long.

Either sell it or gift it / use it next year .

Thanks for the replies, I thought as much @Flamingolingo - glad you got yours sorted, not sure I’m up for the hassle of an argument with JL in store about it as after all it is a pretty ridiculous reason not to talk to her about. It. @lonsdaleshorts do you know if I put it on FB marketplace will MIL see it as I’m friends with her on there? Sorry for the questions, I’ve not sold via there before.

If you sell on FB marketplace there’s an option where you can stop friends seeing what you’re selling.

Flamingolingo · 28/11/2021 10:11

If she sees it on FB just say you’re selling the one you already had.

wavingwhilstdrowning · 28/11/2021 10:11

put it on ebay with a 24hr listing, it'll go quickly

justnotnow1 · 28/11/2021 10:32

Or set up a Facebook with a different name.
I'v always received emails from JL except when I'v had a gift receipt and been given a voucher instead.
