Most dramatic version of O Holy Night?

MyLordWizardKing · 27/11/2021 20:40

Every year, my festive period begins the same way; trying to find my favourite version of O Holy Night for my Christmas playlist, and getting overwhelmed by the sheer amount of renditions there are out there. I'm looking for a cover that is particular dramatic, perhaps bordering on evangelistic aggression by the last chorus. Any suggestions?

(nb: obviously, Eric Cartman's version is already on my list. I just need a more 'traditional' one too)

I like the home alone version, but having just spent the last ten minutes working my way through Spotify's offerings, I also like the one sung by the Glee cast. I think a lot of solo singers Celine take it slowly to really show off and it annoys me, it needs more pace.

This one - Crouch End Festival chorus and Prague philharmonic. You won’t look back. The whole album is both beautiful and full of an unstuffy joyous Christmas atmosphere.

TheBastille and the lady on the subway gave me the chills.

But Eric has my heart.

@nodtik, thank you for posting that.
I know Bastille best for Pompeii , but that was beautiful. Thanks

nodtik · 27/11/2021 21:18

@mineofuselessinformation isn't it just 🥰

Wow, so many suggestions already...thank you! I knew I was asking in the right place. I'll start working through them soon, hopefully by Christmas Day I'll have finally found my favourite! Grin

Another vote for Celine. Although there are some suggestions on here that I now need to listen to!

Clickbait21 · 27/11/2021 21:31

Has to be Mariah.. N Sync did a cute version as well

TuftyMarmoset · 27/11/2021 21:31

It’s not dramatic but I love the King’s College choir version - something about boys’ choirs gives me goosebumps

Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 27/11/2021 21:33

Christina Aguilera's version is very 'dramatic' (all over the place!). I really like Kelly Clarkson's, she has a beautiful voice.

Willowkins · 27/11/2021 21:38

O Holy Night is my favourite Christmas Carol ever since I heard it sung by the choir in Westminster Abbey. For evangelist version, try Hillsong.

Oldnews · 27/11/2021 21:49

My favourite Christmas song, and another vote for Il Divo

Helendee · 27/11/2021 22:12

The version by Home Free is unbeatable for me, it makes the hairs on my neck stand up and my heart turn to mush!

OhWifey · 27/11/2021 22:24

I'm itching to listen to these suggestions. I've been really enjoyed Leona Lewis's version. Quite dramatic toward the end

mummabubs · 27/11/2021 22:25

Slightly ashamed to admit this, but if you can look past the auto tuning the Glee version is beautifully orchestrated 😅

HeirOfSlytherin · 27/11/2021 22:33

Try Pentatonix version. A lot of their Christmas music is fantastic actually.

roastednut · 27/11/2021 22:34

Great thread! I only heard this song for the first time in my 40s - is that weird? I was in a choir and we sang it there and I had honestly never heard it before.

cafedesreves · 27/11/2021 22:34

I'm so ashamed to admit this but I just think you can't beat Alex Jones doing a duet with his childhood self

cafedesreves · 27/11/2021 22:34

*Aled!!!

MafaldaHopkirk · 27/11/2021 22:36

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams

Try . French lyrics, but definitely the feeling you're after!

Lots of great suggestions but, to me, this one is perfect.

Meant to add a massive thanks to my previous post. I'm so pleased you posted.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 27/11/2021 22:38

Oh god, I was thinking of the version sung by Jessica Hynes in character as Angel Matthews in Nativity 2. My children love that so much!

SpookyScarySkeletons · 27/11/2021 22:38

I love the Il Divo version.

The best I have ever heard was in Meadowhall about 10 years ago. They had a choir in and they sang O Holy night. I actually stood there and cried, not in a screaming at the Sistine chapel way but enough to make DH feel embarrassed 😂

[/quote] I really don't want to ruin your Christmas but I'm sure I read somewhere that isn't actually his voice?
SpookyScarySkeletons · 27/11/2021 22:41

... as in the singing voice from the Snowman?
