I'm hosting Christmas this year for first time, and family tradition has always been a sack of after dinner gifts, one each, about a fiver, novelty type things. I can't afford to recreate this, but want to acknowledge somehow, perhaps something along a theme? Ages range from 2-65 and about 15 people. Any ideas??

Mmmm. Could you do a secret Santa? Aske everyone to bring a gift each and put it in the sack??

Secret santa is a good idea. Or is there something you could make quite cheaply e.g. small jam pots? Or do you have dc who could be convinced to make a decoration for everyone out of hama beads or by using paint pens on plain decs?

Different festive Lindt chocolates (e.g. Santa, Reindeer, the sets with a mini Santa and reindeer) and some other festive chocolates (M&S usually do bags of coins, brussel sprouts and stars).
You could wrap them up individually and do a lucky dip. They’re between £1-2.50 so much cheaper than the usual table presents (if there are any dietary restrictions then buy something suitable and put the person’s name on it).

What about these? www.spicepots.com/collections/spice-pots - though admittedly they wouldn't work for the kids - but maybe you could have a bag with the adult and separate for the kids?

A preloved book each.
