A really fun board/card game that can be played by two and doesn't involve drinking!

For my adult dsis (in recovery) and her 17 year old dd, just a fun thing to play over Christmas. I love board games but sadly my family don't [cry] so I am not very up to speed with what's out there. I think they have CArds Against Humanity.

Go old school with draughts or chess? Draughts is my all time favourite board game. I've been insanely good at it and haven't lost since I was about 7 which always infuriated my dad and brother when we all still lived at home as they're both much cleverer than me Grin

If you go for Ticket to Ride, go for the Scandinavian version — it's actually designed for 2 or 3 players.

Mapominoes (I think, something like that anyway!).

I really enjoy card games, so a pack of cards and a crib board would suit me. Maybe with a book of rules for card games.

I love Yahtzee! It’s a dice game not cards/board game, though. We used to play it with my grandparents at Christmas and it was always lots of fun. You do need snacks and drinks with it though IMO but of course that doesn’t need to involve alcohol.

Some two player recommendations from The Dice Tower.

Personally I like co-operative games so Hanabi and Hogwarts Battle (if they like Harry Potter) and Codenames Duel all work well with two. Also the Unlock! series if they might like puzzle solving type things.

I enjoy Splendor for two people. Simple but addictive.

Codenames Duet not Duel - was getting muddled with 7 Wonders Duel (which is another 2 player game which gets a lot of play here).

Backgammon? Also Banangrams and Exploding Kittens. Boggle/Scrabble if they like word games.
Sequence (I think it's called - where you place tokens on a board to make a line, based on playing cards).

Backgammon is fabulous.

Or Dobble for something lighter.

Hive, Tatsu, Shobu, Fox in the Forest Duet, Codenamed Duet, A Little Bit Wordy and Duke are our favourite 2 player games.

I've just tagged you in a Chat thread from back in July (25th if you end up scrolling back looking for it) asking the same question - hopefully you'll find something that fits the bill!
