I’d like to get a few new books for my DD who is nearly 4 and wondered if anyone could suggest some gems? I’ve bought her the Christmas Pine (Julia Donaldson’s new one) for the Christmas Eve box but want a couple more for under the tree. We have most Julia Donaldson books (third child so been collecting for a while!) and most of the classics. We love authors like Rachel Bright, Rob Biddulph and Katherine Raynor do anything along those lines would be great. TIA!

Anything by Lynley Dodd, particularly Hairy McLary and Slinky Malinky, I bought most second hand through world of books.
You Choose (although you might regret that after the 80th reading Grin)

BookTrust and LoveReading4Kids websites are fab for age appropriate recommendations.

You Choose is a fantastic book for this age. The Girls by Lauren Ace is a lovely book too.
A couple of older books (which you may well have!) that are big hits with the three and four year olds I know are "My mum and dad make me laugh", "shark in the park" and "shark in the dark" by Nick Sharratt.

Thanks so much for your suggestions. We have most of the Hairy McLary books, You Choose and Oliver Jeffers. I’m looking into some of the others 😊

Claude books by Alex T Smith are quite funny and a step from picture books into short chapter books.

My 4 year old dd loves there’s no such thing as unicorns as well as tipsy and Tim and the biff and kipper books.

My grandson's favourite book is Ten little robots

We have a great bedtime book called goodnight santa for throughout December

MyCatHatesWhiskas · 13/11/2021 20:36

Jill Murphy is great - Peace at Last is our favourite.

How about the Mog books?

Or the Alfie books by Shirley Hughes? Or anything by Shirley Hughes? (Dogger is probably my favourite)

Also recommend Six Dinner Sid.

Does she have the Jolly Christmas Postman?

Shark in the park - Nick Sharratt
Ten little...... books

Vinniepolis · 13/11/2021 20:48

“The lamb who came to dinner” was one my favourites from when DD was around that age. There are variations of it now but I think original is best.

Anything by Sue Hendra. Mine love the Supertato series and Keith the Cat (they've owned some since 3 and are 7 now). Alien Party on Planet Zumzee and Spookyrumpus were really popular at 4 too.

At that age all of mine loved the Charlie and Lola books.

TeaAndToastx2 · 13/11/2021 22:32

Winnie the witch? My 4 yr old loves these. I got the whole set of 16 for a bargain price.
