Anki Vector robot

My Ds10 has fallen in love with this robot after seeing it on YouTube and wants it for Christmas, but a bit of research tells me anki no longer exist. I've tried googling and it says it's still supported but might not update in the same way but then another site says anki are being taken over so it'll be fine.
I've found some on eBay but I don't want to get it for him if it's going to stop working.
Does anyone have one and can reassure me? We've looked at loads of other robots to see if there are any more recently made ones that he likes but he really wants this one.

Be very careful with these robots. My ds begged for one last year. I got him one and a few months later it stopped responding. I looked it up and the company went bust and was passed to someone else (or something of that nature) and to get him to respond again I had to pay a yearly fee and my ds has barley played with it since. I really don't think they are worth the money to be honest.

@Miracle29 thanks. This is what I'd read - that it was now owned by another company. I didn't know about the yearly fee though. Maybe I will see if there's something else he'd like instead.

I think I paid £34 last year because he had the robot and it stopped responding after a bit and I felt it was a waste so I decided to pay the yearly fee do he got the play out of it. They really are not what they seem.
