Making your house look like santa's grotto - fab or freaky?

My dad has started off a trend in his street - he had a santa's sleigh light up thing hung up over his front window last year - this year there are already 7 houses with outdoor lights up and his neighbour has a huge blow up Winnie the Pooh. My kids love it of course and i love seeing their faces. On the other hand though i think it's completely tasteless - every house has different colours and clashes with the next one. And it's totally wrong when you consider global warming. Not much sign of cutting down of carbon footprints in our street.

I hate it! So tacky! And what a waste of energy!

ballbaby · 09/12/2007 21:53

bunnyhunny · 09/12/2007 21:55

oh, well, that's all right then

pantoinghousewife · 09/12/2007 21:55

Erm.. not my cup of tea but, then I'm a bit of a grump at the best of times.

Nemostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 09/12/2007 21:57

fab to see other peoples but freaky if it was ours..would hate to have all that on our house or even next door..however we love take the little fishes on drive around to look at xmas lights..lol

ballbaby · 09/12/2007 22:00

I agree - find the council estates near here have the most

Freaky.

We have a tasteful string of plain white lights.

That isn't to say we don't enjoy driving round the streets looking at the lights mind you - DSs are terribly excited that it's time to go and look for the life sized moving reindeer made out of white lights that are in someone's front garden nearby! Oddly enough, they are rather tasteful as they are greenery with white lights (one red one for the noses!) rather than neon plastic and multicoloured flashing lights.

Bewilderbeast · 09/12/2007 22:03

It's appalingly tacky I loathe it. I don't mind so much if it's the people who charge other people to view their awful gaudy displays and then give the money to charity though.

wotzsantadoingkissingmummy · 09/12/2007 22:09

Not a patch in the US craze
a few lights in the UK is mothing like the extent they go to

65,000 lights

Want to add they are collecting for locals in need.
'This year, we are again collecting canned goods for the Frisco Food Bank / Frisco Family Services Center - your donation will go a long way to helping those in need. A collection box is located next to our mailbox.'

look at this

ballbaby · 09/12/2007 22:15

ohmigod! I'm going to email them and ask if they've heard of global warming. Is it because you don't pay for the electricity you use i.e. you just pay a flat fee? Or do you just have too much money over there?

do you know ..I dont even think I could be bothered!!!

wangle99 · 10/12/2007 07:41

Ah better not show you a picture of my house then

nappyaddict · 10/12/2007 15:15

i think the first picture in the second link is ok - they are all white after all!

TenLordsaLapin · 10/12/2007 15:16

I loathe them. There is a street near us where almost every house does this in some way - bar one with no lights at all. I always feel tremendously sorry for them!

DH says Christmas is an excellent time to look at an area you might be thinking of moving too

TenLordsaLapin · 10/12/2007 15:16

to

nappyaddict · 10/12/2007 15:20

what do people think of this? tackola or not?

ballbaby · 10/12/2007 17:37

On a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 is really tacky - about a 3

OP posts:
MerryAnnSinglemas · 10/12/2007 17:38

it's tacky but I quite like it ( never on my house of course !)

MerryAnnSinglemas · 10/12/2007 17:39

I meant houses being decorated, not that particular decoration !

kerryk · 10/12/2007 17:42

there is a house in my parents village who have loads of lights out every year, i think you would see it from space.

last year they had a bucket out and all the locals were going round throwing money in thinking it was for charity, it later turned out the money he collected was going towards his electricity bill

quickdrawmcgraw · 10/12/2007 18:44

dh has a friend who had moved into a house on a salubrious street. He put out all his coloured lights at christmas and got a note through the door from the residents assoc. saying 'we notice you have gone 'off brand' with your lights. On this street we only put out white lights'
I like tacky at Christmas.

TenLordsaLapin · 10/12/2007 19:12

quickdrawmcgraw, that would make me cover my house from top to bottom in flashing neon

stepfordwife · 10/12/2007 19:19

me too, lapin
give me tacky over snobby any day.
oddly enough, was just pondering this today
classy v tacky
i aspire to achingly sophisticated blue and white lights, but the brood want the red/green/santa/snowman.
know what?
plenty of time for pretending to be classy once the little fellas have outgrown the tat

Lapsedrunner · 10/12/2007 19:26

Freaky
