Retro Christmas Decorations

This year I've decided I want retro looking chrostmas decorations, the kind I grew up with in the 80s and 90s (my parents never rely updated their decs).

I want hanging tat going across the ceiling and glass coloured baubles. I'd love some of those plastic baubles that have a cotton weave over them too. Not explaining myself well.

The cherry on top would be the tree lights. I want the coloured ones that have sort of like a flower lamp shade over them.

Going to have a look on Ebay for stuff but if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be grateful.

What about lametta? I remember that being popular
You can still get lametta - hard to find though - I ordered the last lot online. We call it ‘icicles’ - they shiver and catch the light. We don’t use tinsel but lametta is a must in this house.

No fashionable trees here - our (real) tree is always multicoloured and retro - decorations have been collected over many years - some are inherited from parents and go back to when I was very small.

I did find some proper retro coloured lights 2 years ago - soft and glowing, not those horrible harsh LED things - in a local shop that was full of Christmas stuff (mostly rather garish tat) but it was a seasonal shop so closed not long afterwards. Should have bought 2 sets! There weren’t enough for our tree so used them with a set of warm white lights. Looked lovely!

I’ve never had a non retro tree, I’ve always tried to replicate what we had as children. I’m so happy that everyone is starting to see the beauty in coloured lights! I found mine on Amazon and they have little plastic flowers around the bulbs. I have the 70’s and 80s equivalent of these satin baubles (pic from Amazon), a battered old robin that has to be 50 odd years old and a load of mismatched baubles that my mum gave me, that my Nan gave her. I do have a load of lovely new ones as well but nothing matches, nothing is colour co-ordinated and it has to include tinsel. If Slade needed a Christmas tree, they’d want mine.

You can still get lametta - hard to find though - I ordered the last lot online Lametta is an essential in our house. There’s absolutely loads of it every year in B&M, Home Bargains, the Pound Shop and Wilkos. Usually red, gold and silver. I don’t go mad with it, but it definitely makes a difference when the fairy lights are on.

My sister always has muted tones (she had what can only be described as beige last year) and I swear she decorates her tree with a set square. It doesn’t feel Christmassy at all.

A few years ago off the back of a similar thread here I got a pack of wrapping paper and wrapped some empty boxes which I have in my fireplace for December. It gives me such an unreal pleasure as I clearly recall several Of the prints from childhood. ❤️
