Christmas when moving…

I love Christmas.

However… We (me and 3DC) are moving house and it could be any time in December or January. So I have to have the house mostly packed as well as decorate for Christmas and buy all presents.

We might have Christmas here or it might be at the new place.

I just needed to vent and figured this would be the best place Grin

I’ve moved the week before Christmas twice. Everything non essential stayed in boxes and as out of site as possible. I covered some boxes with winter blankets but made sure my decorations were to hand on one move. The 2nd we moved overseas so I did a last min dash to charity shops for a cheap tree and decs just to get something up for the DCs. I just focused on one room and ignored the rest.

Ask your dc to do their Christmas list early and get the presents sorted before December. Try and keep the actual number and size of presents as small as possible.
If you can, get extended family and friends’ presents dropped off or posted before December.
If you’re not going to family for Christmas dinner, I’d suggest booking a restaurant. That way, you can pack up all your nice crockery and cooking equipment and let your freezer run low. Or you won’t have to worry about cooking a Christmas dinner in a completely unfamiliar kitchen.
It’s a good idea to pay for your post to be forwarded for a month or so until you’ve changed your address details with everyone.

My head exploded reading your post and I started imagining wrapping the decorated tree in cling film to transport it. It might work ….Hmm

I’ve been having that vision in my head since June, it’s driving me bonkers.

I usually do one big fucking massive tree which takes all day to decorate, and it makes me so happy and relaxed but the thought of possibly having to take it down and then redo it makes my stomach churn.

Dinner - if we are here, we will be at a friends. New place, with family.

DCs are 13/11/6 and the elder ones tend to want more expensive gifts so less to wrap, however neither of them know what they want this year Angry Youngest DC is difficult to buy for this year, so far she’s asked for -

  • x-Ray glasses
  • psychic powers
  • 6 puppies
  • 10 kittens
  • reptiles like her Uncle

I guess the psychic powers wouldn’t require any wrapping….

I love your dd’s list.

It might be worth pointing out that if you put reptiles, kittens and puppies in a packing box they may be unhappy...

She could check on them with her x-Ray glasses though Grin

And I suppose she could use her psychic powers to determine the outcome.

His I'm so stupid. Outwitted by a child, again! Grin

I think your DD’s list is the best Christmas list ever.

We moved around Christmas. We ended up moving in with my parents for 2 months to save the chain from collapsing, so it wasn’t a problem in the end. My plan had been to decorate our old house with paper chains and stars and things that could just be thrown away if we suddenly got notice to move, then have the normal Christmas decorations boxed, well labelled ready to go in case we ended up in the new house in time.

Willow19C · 17/09/2021 13:02

We moved at Christmas. Just had a year without a Christmas tree. Was a bit weird...

CrazyBaubles · 17/09/2021 15:30

Our original moving date was the week before Christmas last year so I had a plan to have a very small amount of decos that year - essentially a pre-lit twiggy tree in the new house and lots of candles. We packed up pretty much everything then had our date pushed back until mid-Jan 🙄

We used the white twiggy tree thing we had (which you just plug in), cards and DH hung a string of fairy lights around the living room. It wasn't great but it wasn't too bad.

I'd also finished my shopping and the plan was to store the presents at my parents / PIL.

You may have to settle for a smaller Christmas either way but plan things that are effective and quick (like the lights).
No idea what to suggest for your (very creative sounding) Dd though!

Mombie2021 · 17/09/2021 18:07

DD also claims the powers would help her look after the small zoo she wants so I wouldn’t have to do anything Grin

I’ve taken 8 bin bags of crap to the skip today, and started packing up the lesser used Christmas decorations/the ones for DDs bedrooms - they can just have their bedding and lights this year rather than the 4ft trees they usually have Blush

The LEGO Elf House I ordered for us to open on the 1st (and build through the month, rather than the same/more money on plastic tat advent calendars) arrived today and it’s adorable.

Your DD has a clear plan and seems to also possess the power of persuasion. Well, she's got me convinced anyway Grin

Mombie2021 · 17/09/2021 19:33

I’m starting to understand why her sisters do whatever she asks, no matter how bizarre the request!
