Can anyone recommend one as a Christmas gift. Seems to be different types, versions, dots??? Totally confused. What do you use or recommend? Thanks!

I have the 4th generation echo and love it. I got mine on a Black Friday deal so for a much reduced price.

dd2 has the one with a screen, all the others in the house are dots. It doesn't make much difference really, but I would probably go for the show.

They are alway on sale on primeday and black friday so I would wait until then.

Our boys have Alexa Show 8s (with screens) and love them. Try looking on the UK Hot Deals app for the best prices between now and Christmas

We have dots, an echo and 2 shows. Think they have a sale on some atm. If not they usually do near to Christmas. I'd go for an echo or the show

ds(17) has an alexa show 5 we bought for him when we inherited an echo and a couple of dots which we use in the rooms downstairs and some plugs.

He uses -

  • Screen to show a clock which is good
  • A stand bought through amazon for wireless charging of phone or airpods is also good
  • An Alexa compatible plug to turn on/off his fan which he likes
  • I use it to talk to him in his room (call down for dinner etc) either via the dots or iPad Alexa app
  • He setup a routine where Alexa switches on his fan at a certain time for 10 minutes to remind him its time to think about getting off PlayStation.

Think that is mostly what he uses for, he doesn't "ask" alexa anything, he would just google it instead.

Doesn't use -

  • He has switched off the camera as finds it invasive (don't blame him!)
  • Doesn't use screen for anything else
  • We got the colour changing/dimming bulbs for his big lights but the novelty wore off them quickly
  • He doesn't use to play his spotify music as prefers his airpods
  • He never uses to call me, he just comes down

We don't use ours much either - just to call in on ds and I use it to play the radio in background when WFH. I did use it for shopping lists at one point but again novelty wore off. dh refuses to speak to her at all, she creeps him out 🤦‍♀️

We have echo dots in every room and a show in the kitchen. We love them and have lights etc controlled through them. They have lots of cool features they just need unlocking. Can also make calls and video calls to people with a show.

Mine watch YouTube on our show and I watch things whilst cooking

Thanks for all the advice. Looked at the plugs as well! I feel like im about to go over to the dark side and there will be no way back Grin

Does anyone know how much you can get the Alexa (with screen) for in the sales?

kimlo · 29/08/2021 21:14

I've just looked at my orders last year I paid £40. This years model is on a limited time deal now for £60.

Poppins17 · 29/08/2021 21:36

Thanks @kimlo
