I know you can buy bottles of the stuff but thought I'd make my own.

1 bottle of red plonk, a good slug of brandy , 1/2 carton of orange juice, a bit more brandy, a cinnamen stick, some cloves and a 1/2 tsp of ground ginger and about 2-3 tablespoons of sugar depending how sweet you like it, i rarely measure or weigh anything in the kitchen and the mulled wine recipe changes depending on how much brandy i have drunk myself !

I usually buy some mulled wine sachets (or hessian bags) and infuse in a bottle of French, must be French!!! red wine over a gentle heat (don't want to lose too much lovely alcohol!) and stir in a bit of sugar, you could pretty it up with cinamon sticks and orange slices. yum yum!!

Red wine, slug of brandy, orange studded with cloves, cinnamon stick, sugar to taste.

This is the one I use, we had a bit of a 'do' last night and so far four people asked for the recipe!

Mulled Wine

Ingredients

2 x 75cl bottles medium to full-bodied red wine
2.5 pints (1.5 litres) water
1 orange stuck with cloves
2 oranges, sliced
2 lemons, sliced
6 tablespoons granulated sugar or honey (I use sugar)
2 inch (5 cm) piece of cinnamon stick
2 teaspoons ground ginger

Put all the ingredients in a saucepan, heat to simmering point, stirring until all the sugar has dissolved.

Keep it barely at simmering point for at least 20 minutes ? do not boil or the alcohol will evaporate.

You can make this in advance and reheat just before needed.

Serve it warn in ½ pint mugs (in which case there are 12 servings) or else 24 wine glasses.

My recipe is really simple and I prefer it ove rmore complicated ones.

One bottle of robust red wine
One pint of water
One cinnamon stick
About five cloves
4oz sugar
Garnish with orange and lemon slices.

Warm - do not boil. A slow cooker is excellent.
