What are you buying your 9yo?

9yo DS is getting tickets to Harry Potter world for Christmas so I won't be buying much more but would like some little things for him to open and hopefully keep him busy on the day.

He loves Harry Potter and pokemon, reading, playing on switch or PS4. He likes Lego but only building the sets and then he never looks after them and bits are missing after a week. He has an Alexa. I feel like he is at an awkward age (almost 10) where he isn't in to as many toys now but I would rather he didn't spend all day on a screen!

What smaller bits/stocking fillers are you buying your 9/10yo?

Was meant to say...last year my ds had a pokemon obsession and spent every bit of money on cards etc.....he soon lost interest and gave them away at school! So annoying Confused

InvincibleInvisibility · 29/08/2021 19:52

Has he read the alex rider books? My 9 year old loves them.

Its difficult to find them things to actually play with at this age.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 29/08/2021 19:54

Ds is nine and has asked for Lego, but like a PP it gets built then sits waiting to be dusted.

My list-
Lego luigi
Switch game Arms
Skateboard
Some type of coding book / set
Pyjamas
Japanese snacks

If anyone has recommendations for anything coding related I'd love to hear them.

My DD will be almost 9 at Christmas… so far I have got her:

Big Harry Potter Lego set (astronomy tower I think)
GravityMaze and Blokus games (thanks bargain thread peeps!)
Glitter LED sphere lamp for her bedroom
Glitter backpack and pencil case
Some Harry Potter t-shirts and pyjamas
A couple of book sets.

I’m not sure what else to get. She’s been asking for a Switch lite (she hasn’t had any consoles so far), but as it’s what I consider a really expensive present, if I do get one it’ll have to be joint with my parents and maybe an auntie or two!

I was thinking about a Lego Hedwig set too. Good ideas on this thread!

DD’s birthday is just after Christmas, so I may shunt some of the gifts over to then (so far, I have only got little things for her birthday).

JimmyLennon · 29/08/2021 20:59

I would recommend a switch for those considering a console. It's also good because you can play either on the TV or handheld.

Dd similar age and into HP wants Harry Potter capsules which are about a tenner on Amazon so she is getting one in stocking and one for bday

indecisivewoman81 · 30/08/2021 09:49

I've just discovered a great website called Wicked Uncle that has lots of different kids gifts in.

MeredithMae · 30/08/2021 16:15

Last year 10 year old DS loved his tie dye kit (and plain t-shirts from amazon), and an amazon fake oodie.

MeredithMae · 30/08/2021 16:17

@BangingOn which website did you buy the Pokemon double for please? I had a google but can't find any less than £50!

coodawoodashooda · 30/08/2021 16:18

A hot tub!

EnglishGirlApproximately · 30/08/2021 19:14

@indecisivewoman81thanks for that recommendation. Absolutely everything on there is stuff that DS would love so that's my Christmas sorted!

BangingOn · 30/08/2021 19:58

@MeredithMae I bought it from Plaza Japan but it seems to be out of stock now. They are a good source of Pokemon things in general though and the shipping isn’t too bad.

My 7 & 9yos DDs have a few HP bits, note pads & house pens. I got a Tom riddle diary’s in Aldi & storage box. I also bought some quill sets online, not sure how good they are but look good. I got my 7yo an Hermione photo and autograph off Amazon, she’s going to love it. We love HP trivial pursuit and other HP board games here.

AliceMcK · 31/08/2021 20:32

I forgot to add, my 7yo has asked for the invisibility cloak this year which we’ve got her x

Someone asked for coding gifts - Turing tumble is absolutely brilliant & is coding without screens.

My 9yr old DS is getting:
Beanopedia book and some old Beano annuals to add to his vast collection
Treasure X
Scooby Doo dvd set
Small Minecraft Lego set
Horrible Science game
Bank Attack game
Cuddle cushion
Japanese/Pokémon sweets and drinks
Lego Mario set

He’s also at that awkward to buy for age where he doesn’t play with toys as much, and has already had a new bike, tablet, scooter and skis this year. Will be watching this thread for inspiration!

Costalatte · 01/09/2021 22:22

@yoshiblue

Do you know where you got Vulpix from? I saw this last year in our local Game and haven’t seen one since,. My nearly 8 year old DS is collecting the Pokemon plushes and doesn’t have this one yet. I recently saw a Treecko which is part of the new wave just released.

yoshiblue · 01/09/2021 22:34

@Costalatte I got it in Game, there was one random one on its own and I'd never seen it before.

I've just bought Yamper tonight for his birthday. Yamper and Treeko seem like the only two 'new' ones at the moment.

Have you seen the Build a Bear ones? My son had a Scorbunny one made with sound effects (very annoying) but he loves it!

drspouse · 02/09/2021 02:38

Following with added SEN and sheer bloody mindedness!

Costalatte · 02/09/2021 10:36

@yoshiblue I thought you might say it was from Game. Just had a quick google and it looks like that is a Game exclusive. I found a Growlithe in Game around this time last year which I have never seen anywhere again!

I’ve got a Scorbunny put away for birthday/Christmas which I originally bought for Easter then found a Hangry Morpeko which I had to give him instead.

I think I’ll also be buying Yamper. It does that the those are the only 2 new ones this time, I was hoping for another Eeveelution as my partner is after those.

I’ll have to look at the Build a bear ones, that could be a good birthday treat that we could go to make together.
