We eat Savoy cabbage, spring greens etc steamed but how do I cook the red cabbage? I would usually use red or white cabbage for coleslaw but dd requested red cabbage with Christmas dinner after seeing an ad on tv. Wish I had bought prepared now.

Braise it slowly in the oven, I add apple, apple vinegar and brown sugar

I braise slowly in a dry pan, with a lid on. I add pieces of apple and a bit of brown sugar.

Really easy especially if you have a slow cooker, just slice it and arrange the cabbage in layers with sugar and spice mix in between, then I use red wine vinegar and add some apple.

Shred it and cook it in a casserole dish with apple, onion, sugar and spices and some wine vinegar.

Kakibob1924 · 24/12/2020 18:45

Throw it out!!!

Shred and cook with butter, apples, cinnabar and brown sugar

As everyone else says braised - with apples, onions, vinegar, sugar, cinnamon & nutmeg.

I use this recipe roughly but cook it Christmas eve to have with my gammon joint then have leftovers of it Christmas day. I have simplified it this year and did it in the slow cooked on low for 6 hours.

Delia’s is lovely. I’d do it tonight so you don’t have to worry about it tomorrow - it can be warmed through gently on the hob or microwaved, whichever is more convenient.

Doyoumind · 24/12/2020 18:54

I was going to recommend Delia's recipe but PP beat me to it. It's hard to go wrong with it.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 24/12/2020 18:56

If you don’t have cooking apples you can skip them.

RudolphtheRemaindeer · 24/12/2020 19:14

Did ours' yesterday. Slice it up, layer in a slow cooker with onion and apple. Mix up some brown sugar, dry cider, mixed spice and cider vinegar. Chuck that in. Cook on low for 4 hours or so.

As others said, Delia's braised red cabbage. If no Bramleys in, you can substitute for any other apples. It takes a long time to cook, but is dead easy, and the prep time is fairly minimal.

Wilt down with butter till soft, splash balsamic, steam for half hour (don't let dry out), when soft, season with salt pepper and couple of spoons of red currant jelly. It's my favourite Christmas veg totally stolen from my Danish family.

VerbenaGirl · 24/12/2020 19:40

Braise slowly (I do it in the slow cooker) with Bramley apple, red wine, browned onions, salt & pepper and a touch of redcurrent jelly or Ribena (not sugar free).

I've made this today ready for tomorrow. It's my first time making it so fingers crossed it's bomb proof like you say!
