Turkey help!

Help! Does this turkey look ok to you? Collected yesterday, dated 27th but odd colour on the top? It's to cook tomorrow so don't want to unwrap today. I wouldn't be able to smell it anyway (thanks covid)

Safe? Or not?

Even if it was fine, I couldn’t eat it I’m afraid. Do you have time to take it back today?

namechangedyetagain · 24/12/2020 09:00

I can't. Im in isolation. Friend picked it up yesterday

Is there no one in your house that can smell it?

BigTallyWacker · 24/12/2020 09:18

I wouldn’t be eating that I’m afraid.

Oh no. Sorry, I just saw that. Where is it from? Are you able to contact them, particularly if it was a local butcher as they may deliver. Any friend able to take it back for you? I know I would if you were a friend of mine.

It's not butter, or something like that, seeping through the skin is it?

Whatwouldscullydo · 24/12/2020 10:05

Is it not just a bit of bruising from where the feathers are plucked ?

Dementedswan · 24/12/2020 10:18

Is it slimey? Any nicks in the packaging? Mine looked like that last year and smelt rank. There was a tiny nick in the packaging so it had gone off.

Open it and get someone else In The house to smell it. If it smells neutral it's fine.
Turkey or chicken going off will smell really wrong. Smell the cavity after you've removed the giblets too.

Sometimes in processing colour can transfer, it can be caused by the bile duct being pierced when the innards are removed. It could've been caused by feathers being plucked too.

The best way to check is with a keen nose (I understand you don't have one right now).

Today I'd be unwrapping my turkey and getting it ready to roast and back into the fridge until it actually goes into a hot oven. So checking it now is fine.

WaxOnFeckOff · 24/12/2020 11:10

I agree that it just looks like bruising etc.

The smell is the key I'm afraid.

I'm cooking mine today so maybe opening it and getting it sniffed by someone is fine and if you feel it's fine you could always cook it today

WaxOnFeckOff · 24/12/2020 11:11

But agree with pp it would be fine recovered in something fresh and back in the fridge for tomorrow

Quick update to say that my step dad came to the rescue, got it changed in town and delivered back to us. Sadly due to covid he and mum won't get to enjoy it but I've promised a Christmas part 2 when we're allowed together again.

Thank you and Happy ChristmasXmas Smile
