Sounds good to me, but I can't have a boxing day buffet without pickled onions!

SilverBirchWithout · 15/12/2020 11:06

Cold Turkey
A mixed salad, pasta salad, rice salad or coleslaw
Something heated in oven - quiche, pizza, heat the sausage rolls, samosas etc
Crusty bread
A non dried-fruity dessert - chocolate log, lemon tart, or trifle
Nuts feel a bit odd for a buffet

Pickled Onions are an excellent suggestion, love them myself! Am also thinking hard boiled eggs....

Love your naice tomatoes - We always have naice ones all year round, life is too short!

Definitely part baked baguettes, then people can make more substantial cheese/meat based rolls.

Pork pie
Pickled onions (specifically)

ritzbiscuits · 15/12/2020 12:09

Delia's homemade sausage rolls can be made in advance and well worth the effort.

Defo bread! The part baked ones are ok actually or I made a fresh loaf, once 🙈 in lockdown in the slow cooker from a bread mix that turned out pretty good!

I also think it needs bulking out a little...I'd be adding mini pizzas, quiches, vol au vents, salad, pigs in blankets (veggie version in our case though) and left overs from Christmas dinner like nutroast, stuffing, roasties...Then again we're a bit obsessed with food in our family so that might sound like too much to you!

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 15/12/2020 14:29

You definitely, definitely need bread. Get part baked rolls. I’d be very disappointed to have cheese and ham and pate and no bread!

And salad.

Sweet chilli dipping sauce will liven up the samosas and spring rolls.

For me a Christmas buffet is not complete without tiger prawns and smoked salmon. I’d forego the pizza to be honest in favour of those items as pizza is an everyday type of food.

And a fruit salad or fruit jelly or panna cotta - a lighter pudding option too.

I’d try to add a bit more variety and colour to the basics to make it special.

I wouldn't do buffet. I am not at al covid averse (we have all had it) but a buffet just brings unnecessary risks. Having to hand sanitise each time they went up, keep plates covered and then uncover etc.

Is it worth it?

Iamblossom · 15/12/2020 14:51

Oooh yes pork pie. Added.

I always have crackers with cheese and pate but yes will get part baked baguettes.

Yep deffo comfortable with a buffet. And won't be getting people to sanitise before each visit to the table either...

I would lose some of the fussy nibbly bits and substitute baked potatoes, not huge ones, medium sized. Lots of butter, plenty of cheese.

mrsm43s · 15/12/2020 15:08

Pickled onions and gherkins
Grapes and clementines
Lovely vine tomatoes (draped over the cheeseboard)
Pretzels
Cheese savouries
Twiglets
Part baked baguettes (the whole ones, not the rolls) served warm.
A show stopper pud/sweet - either something like a homemade gingerbread house or a really fancy (homemade) trifle/cheesecake etc
Prawn ring
Cold sliced turkey.

mummyof2boys30 · 15/12/2020 15:12

We are quite plain eatsrs so this is ours
Mini pizzas, Turkey sandwiches, salad sandwiches, cocktail sausages, vol au vents, Breadsticks and dip and some nice crisps. Couple different desserts too

Justme10 · 15/12/2020 15:15

Can't have a Boxing Day buffet without cocktail sausages and chicken wings 😋

justjuggling · 15/12/2020 18:14

Homemade potato salad?

Or maybe do some bubble & squeak to go with the cold meat/cheese. Am now salivating at the thought of that with pickled onions and coleslaw. Yum.

Love a buffet!
