Does anyone know anything about Switch games?

I fear I've cocked up. DS (age 8) asked for Mario Odyssey. I've just gone to get some wrapping done and see the game I bought is called Mario 3D Allstars!!! This doesn't appear to be the same game. I must have seen the word Mario and assumed it was right.

I've just looked up the Odyssey game and it seems MUCH more expensive. And unlikely to arrive before Christmas (I'm in a tricky location).

Does anyone know both games and know if DS is going to be terribly disappointed? He doesn't know much about gaming but got a Switch for his birthday in September and has seen YouTube of the Odyssey game...

OP: there are literally HUNDREDS of games with the name “Mario” in the title.

If you can’t buy a physical copy of odyssey, you could pay for a download direct to the console. You’ll figure it out.

Another vote for downloading the game he wants. He'll probably want to play it with his friends.

Can you return the one you've bought?

All stars is the newest Mario game, ds is getting it for Christmas.

If he doesnt know a lot about gaming, he might be happy with all stars. Can you show him YouTube videos of the other Mario games over the next week to sneakily show him how the others are also good? I think at his age you would get away with it.

All Stars isn't new, its a compilation of older games from the Wii, Gamecube and N64. They are very different to Odyssey and arguably a lot more frustrating / difficult, if you think that might be an issue for him.

OP, another vote for buying the game digitally. Just make sure you download it before Christmas day!

Definitely another vote for downloading odyssey here. All stars is more of a trip down memory lane for old skool Mario fans

Sorry pokemon, I keep forgetting I am in a different country and the 3d allstars compilation is the newest release where I am, that one was only released here in September.

3d allstars is a limited release and only available to 31st march when it will be taken off the shelves, so may be worth keeling to sell later

Odyssey is an absolutely amazing game, it’s honestly the best I’ve ever played! We all loved it. Definitely just download it on the Switch.

Like other have said, you can download it directly onto the switch.

Odyssey is similar to 3D all stars. If he has asked for odyssey, I would still give the 3D all stars as there are 3 games in one so he’ll find something he can do, and if he really hates it, you can always trade it in after Xmas. They aren’t completely difference, or as pp said he can download the right one on Xmas day if you give him a ‘voucher’ (homemade) or if he gets cash from family etc.

We're massive Nintendo fans in this house. I've purposely not bought All Stars as its just a re-release of old games from old consoles. Fine for adult nostalgia, but not for young kids IMHO. It's a lazy port, so they haven't optimised them well for the Switch either.

Odyssey is amazing and needs to be bought unfortunately. You say your location is tricky, but Tesco/Asda/Argos will all have this item most likely. Even Currys/Currys on eBay is another option.

Normally I'm completely with you on this one but the OP has said that she can't get the game before Christmas due to location.

Just to say thanks for help on this. I downloaded Odyssey in the end. It was DS's main present so felt I must get it right!

I've kept 3D Allstars in a drawer and will see if it becomes more valuable- you never know - if not DS can have it as an extra for next Christmas! 😀
