Help! Chromebook or Laptop?

tisonlymeagain · 09/12/2020 11:38

I need to buy a laptop of some sort for my daughter for Christmas. I have been looking at Chromebooks as this is what they use at school and she's happy with that (also within budget at around £300).

But am I missing a trick? Would a normal laptop be better?

Anyone seen any deals for either? I looked at Black Friday but they were more expensive than they had been previously!

Going solely on the swearword count when DH uses one or the other Grin I'd definitely go for a laptop. He hates his Chromebook, says it freezes all the time and randomly shuts itself down. In fact he was debating whether he could justify taking it to the tip as it's only about a year old! He's much quieter when he's on his laptop.

Laptop, definitely - you can do so much more with them. DS sometimes has to use a Chromebook at school and says they're absolutely awful compared to the laptops.

Always a good measure 🤣

I have a Chromebook and it lives in a drawer and that is where it will stay 😂 it is awful, as pp said it shuts off when it wants, has some days when it doesn't want to switch on, doesn't charge some days but is fine other days.

My DC have Asus Vivobook flip laptops and they have been great. Bought them for home learning. They run on Windows instead of chrome and I find them much better than the Chromebook

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 09/12/2020 15:51

Laptop definitely.

Don’t bother with a chromebook.

ChalkDinosaur · 09/12/2020 15:56

Depends what she wants it for. I have a chrome book, used mainly for browsing/watching stuff and it's great. But the laptop is way better for actual work and for storing photos, lots of documents etc.

junglepie · 09/12/2020 20:23

see, I absolutely LOVE my chromebook. use it for documents, sheets etc...Super fast to boot up. No need for anti virus stuff seperate. Superb for internet browsing/watching netflx/youtube etc.... Much prefer it to my laptop!

tisonlymeagain · 09/12/2020 21:30

@ChalkDinosaur mainly school work (G Suite), browsing and some Netflix

Laptop. My husband bought a chrome book for my daughter. I thought I wasn’t getting on with it as I was used to a laptop for work but over lockdown the issues with online packages and downloading and uploading have really come to the fore. She’s 15 and uses it a lot for school, or rather she uses it partially and then ends up on my laptop for editing, snipping, clipboard, formatting. The list goes on for things which are just so much better on the laptop!!!

ArthurChristmas2 · 10/12/2020 05:32

PS I ordered an amazing top range Dell directly from them applying an online discount code for an additional 15% off. It was £379 and for its performance and features was a fantastic price. That was back in October. They were bringing out a new model I’ve since realised so you may have some luck too!

I'm the opposite to most people on this thread, I love my Chromebook. (I did have a laptop but gave it away because I rarely used it)

I bought the Chromebook to take to university because it was much lighter than a laptop, so I use it for taking notes, reading and annotating texts. I also write essays, use spreadsheets, and basic stuff like email, watching Netflix, and social media on it It's been a Godsend during lockdown for video chats.

There are things it can't do that a laptop can, but I've also got a pc that can do those things so don't miss having a laptop.

In that case a Chromebook could work well for what she needs - I'd probably use my chrome book for that rather than laptop. But I think that goes against the majority on here so maybe most people would say different!

LunaLoveFood · 12/12/2020 16:43

I have laptop at work and Chromebook at home (under £200) and absolutely love my Chromebook. To the point that I am trying to convince my boss to let me change my laptop to a Chromebook as I'm having so many problems with my laptop.
I think it depends how much you rely on Microsoft (although I do have teams on an app and word).

I personally prefer Google Doc to Microsoft word now anyway.

LunaLoveFood · 12/12/2020 16:44

Will also add I've used my Chromebook to complete my online masters degree with no problem.

Spongebobsquarefringe · 12/12/2020 16:52

I got my 2 chrome books just before first lockdown and it was well worth it, they use google classroom, all their docs are google slides, docs etc, they’ve had zoom for outside clubs and have found the chrome book to be brilliant

Metallicalover · 12/12/2020 16:57

Chromebook definitely. For what it's going to be used for. You don't have to down load any internet security or update etc. You can use google docs etc instead of Microsoft word.
My husband works in IT and always advise chromebooks for this reason. Unless you need gaming software or something specialist.

SpnBaby1967 · 12/12/2020 18:34

Work provided a chromebook when we all needed quick cheap computers to wfh. They have no upgraded us all to laptops as they were shocking!

Mine especially hated the hot summer, as soon as the ambient temp went above 25C it would bloat about being too hot and shut down for hours on end. Was great for getting out of work & chilling in the pool instead though Grin
