What are you having? We usually have something seafood and simple but are having a non-fish eater over for the day.

We’re having mini Yorkshire puddings with rare roast beef dipped in gravy, with horseradish sauce and balsamic roasted beetroot. I’ll serve them as canapés with a glass of wine on arrival rather than as a first course at the table (I think, anyway - that’s my plan for now but it might change).

Prawn cocktail

myhobbyisouting · 08/12/2020 11:51

Helpful. I know Grin

But safe :) It'll probably be our starter too
purpleme12 · 08/12/2020 11:52

Prawn cocktail all the way
(I hope that's what we're having!)

lockitdown · 08/12/2020 11:54

Well. sadly no as we are having the non fish eater :(

I love a smoke salmon salad but for a non fish eater... hmm... a ham salad?

MaMaD1990 · 08/12/2020 12:04

A simple soup and bread roll is always a hit for us!

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 08/12/2020 12:14

Serve what you usually would for everyone else and just do a little separate starter for the non-fish eater

purpleme12 · 08/12/2020 12:15

Yes if you can't have prawn cocktail I'd go for pate on something nice or soup

Atalune · 08/12/2020 12:17

For the non fishy-
Pate with toast points and chutney
Beetroot carpaccio

Marmite27 · 08/12/2020 12:21

An entrée is a main course.

Which is weird, because it sounds like it should be a started.

We usually have soup, prawn cocktail, melon, pate, chicken and bacon salad drizzled with balsamic dressing or haddock & cheese Fishcakes. I usually get the kids to pick one before we do the ‘big’ shop.

@Marmite27 I know. I am, however, Australian and we call "starters" the entree. Upside down as usual.

It’s a minefield Grin I’d recommend staying away from any discussion of dinner vs tea!

Only in America. The original, French, term refers to the smaller course at the beginning of a meal.
myhobbyisouting · 08/12/2020 12:28

@Marmite27 are you American?

OP - just give the non fish eater the cocktail minus the prawns

SpamIAm · 08/12/2020 12:36

What's a prawn cocktail without prawns? Some lettuce with Marie Rose sauce? Bit of a poor offering 😂

I don't eat fish. I'd be thrilled with pate and toast and wouldn't mind that I wasn't having the same as all the rest of you (and would be grateful you'd got me something else rather than just giving me lettuce).

safariboot · 08/12/2020 12:38

We're having soup.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 08/12/2020 12:40

I’d do roasted beetroot with red onion and balsamic vinegar and plenty of thyme, served on a puff pastry disc, with the juices poured over and maybe a little bit of cheese just warmed through.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 08/12/2020 12:43

I make haggis parcels. Haggis wrapped into triangles with filo pastry and served with redcurrent sauce.

myhobbyisouting · 08/12/2020 12:44

"What's a prawn cocktail without prawns? Some lettuce with Marie Rose sauce? Bit of a poor offering 😂"

Yep, it's a cocktail 😂

I wouldn't be giving up the classic Xmas must have for some non-prawn eating weirdo.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 08/12/2020 12:45

Also have a baked goats cheese with rocket, watercress and spinach and red onion chutney.

There is always a soup and also pate with melba toast.

I dont eat all of it! But everyone gets a choice.

Pythonesque · 08/12/2020 12:49

Put something else in place of the prawns in the prawn cocktail? Avocado might work?

lockitdown · 08/12/2020 12:49

Good ideas here, thanks! Visitor is in her 80's so something light for us .

We'll be having slices of honeydew melon wrapped in pancetta (possibly sprinkled with pomegranate seeds for a festive touch) followed by carrot soup spiced with ginger and coriander.
