We are having canapés for starters this Christmas.
Can you please share your favourite ones.

Blinis with smoked salmon, sour cream, chives, half quail’s egg, caviar

Mini Yorkshire puddings with rare roast beef dipped in gravy, horseradish sauce, beetroot

Melba toast with liver pâté, bacon pieces, crispy onion, thinly sliced raw onion and pickled beetroot

Vol-au-vents with crab/trout/salmon/mackerel mousse or pâté, topped with dill, lemon, cucumber

Vol-au-vents with chicken & ham salad, with garnish of whatever salad veg you’ve included in the salad

German grain bread/rye bread (cut into bite size pieces) with Brie/cambazola/Gorgonzola, topped with cranberry sauce

German grain bread/rye bread (cut into bite size pieces) with gravadlax & sauce & lemon

You could also do tiny quiches (or cut one big one into small pieces)

Tiny puff pastry tarts (Delia has a good recipe)

Devilled eggs

Cheese twists

You are fantastic. Thx.
I want to go a bit posh but did just nearly succumb to some Christmas tree shaped vol-au-vent cases in Aldi.Grin

Honestly I know they’re considered a bit dated but every time I do them everyone loves them.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 07/12/2020 09:09

We had those one year! 😊🎄🎄🎄😋

livingthegoodlife · 07/12/2020 09:15

@HollyandIvyandallthingsYule some great suggestions there. Think I'll be stealing a couple of ideas!

BIWI · 07/12/2020 09:18

Devils on horseback - a soft prune, wrapped in smoked streaky bacon and roasted till the bacon is crispy

A cube of mozzarella, sandwiched between a halved cherry tomato; can also coat the cheese in pesto if you like

Mini meatballs with some kind of dipping sauce

Miniature cheese scones

WokesFromHome · 07/12/2020 09:20

I just want as much prepped as possible otherwise I'll be in the kitchen the whole time.

Holly, were the Aldi ones ok?

Yes, we always get them from Aldi and they’re perfectly good.👍 We just usually get the little round ones not the trees.

If you’re going to do mozzarella/cherry tomato sticks, you can add a basil leaf and an olive - looks very festive with the red/white/green. Although I did just see BIWI’s suggestion to coat the cheese in pesto which adds some greenery in as well. Very easy to do ahead of time.

Shop bought quiche or Spanish tortilla cut into small pieces is a good option as well.

And I honestly think that no canapé table is truly complete without a cheese hedgehog! Cheese cube sandwiched between two dried cranberries would be quite Christmassy for example...again it’s one of those things people love to laugh at, but every time I’ve seen/heard of it being served there’s never anything left.

If you have two or three options like above that you can assemble/prepare the day before & refrigerator, then you only need 2 or 3 more assembled on the day to make a really nice selection. Always include a savoury, crunchy option as well, just to fill it out a bit.

Asparagus wrapped in Parma ham and baked then drizzle a balsamic reduction and sprinkle sesame seeds. They’re one of the few canapés that are worth the faff imo

Miltonkeynesmummy · 07/12/2020 14:19

These are brilliant and can be made in advance and baked at the last minute.

This year I've bought a crispy duck and I'm going to shred it, mix with hoisin and bake in little pastry roll.

Then just smoked salmon with a bit of lemon juice on cocktail sticks
