Can anyone who understands the modern world please help me?!

My son has a google nest mini in his room. He uses it to play music, but when you say 'hey google, play [particular song]' then it often refuses to - I think because we haven't got some sort of premium package.

He likes listening to music and podcasts (e.g. comedy) in bed. I don't let him have his phone in his bedroom. So his current model is that he downloads things onto an mp3 player, and uses a speaker (mp3 player, speaker and nest all on his bedside table). The nest is used just now and again. He has asked for a new (better) mp3 player and speaker (his current one buzzes!) for Christmas.

I'd gladly get these, but I'm wondering if there is another smarter thing to do instead. Can I just buy a premium package for the nest, which will allow him to just ask it to play whatever songs he wants, and (crucially) whatever podcasts he wants? And wouldn't that then make the mp3 player and speaker redundant (at least for the year)?

Any help gratefully received, before I go out and buy some more unnecessary electronics!

I think you have it - just subscribe to Spotify Premium. If you get the Family package you can listen to it on more than one device at a time.

Thanks so much rbe78. So (sorry to be so clueless - I have tried googling but don't understand) - are podcasts on spotify too? E.g. mitchell and webb, that kind of thing?

There's a Mitchell and Webb podcast? Awesome, do you know the name?

Most podcasts are on Spotify, yes.

I think it's called 'that mitchell and webb sound'. Apparently the first series is brilliant, the next one not so much. There is a hilarious sketch about the translation of bird songs.
My son loves these sorts of comedy podcasts, and I can hear him laughing to himself when I'm getting ready for bed!
If you have similar taste, then you might also like 'The Pin'.

Thank you for your help rbe78. I know it was a bit of a boring question, but I think I have a good plan for a present now, so thank you!
