Hi, I'm hoping some of you on here might be able to advise me on the best kind of and the best place to buy sock wool!

I've been struggling with what to buy my Mum who has everything already but she loves knitting and knitting socks in particular so I thought I might put a hamoer together of some nice, fancy wools for knitting. Sadly she didnt pass the knitting gene down to me so I'm clueless as to what the wool needs to be made from etc.
Thanks!

Sock wool is a thickness or weight of wool I think. I crochet, but not socks and use the wool warehouse they are very reliable.here
I find the nicest yarn is at least partly natural so bamboo or real wool.

Socks are usually knitted in 4-ply yarn (at least if they are to be worn with shoes and not like chunky house slippers). Natural fibres like wool are best, but for socks you ideally need a small amount of nylon spun in (10%ish) to make them strong and longer lasting. So just go to a big retailer like lovecrafts.com or Woolwarehouse.co.Uk , search the 4-ply yarn (also called fingering weight, anything where you get around 400m per 100g) and ideally wool /nylon mix, and you’ll definitely be fine.

It depends on her style but there’s a lot of yarns made for sock knitting that are dyed so that as you knit a strip appears (called self-striping or self-patterning yarns). Have a look at West Yorkshire Spinners (nice end of mass produced ) or Opal (they do a lot of self-patterning yarns). Or there are loads of artisan yarn dyers that make lovely yarn, just look on Etsy (you might pay £20 per hand dyed skein though, rather than, say, £8 for mass-produced, so depends on budget.

One skein of 100g easily makes a pair of socks.

Hope that helps!

Thank you! I'll have a look through those websites and chose a few then maybe get a couple of posh ones from etsy too.

Anything called sock weight. Pp is right that you want some nylon which makes them more hard wearing on heels and toes. West Yorkshire Spinners is good and has some sparkly self striping ones at the mo. I like Regia as well - a bit basic but washes so much better than fancy yarns you can almost treat them like normal socks - I tend to save the Etsy stuff for shawls.

I popped on to say West Yorkshire Spinners. It's good quality and you can't go wrong with it.

Look at this Signature 4 Ply

Also, how far is she from Skipton? Could you buy her tickets for Yarndale next year? An IOU if they not on sale yet. They also have a shop with lovely project bags, special edition hope sock yarn etc:
