Stockings - where?!

DH and I can't agree on stocking placement.

Him - stockings go in the living room and are placed on the fireplace for Father Christmas to fill when he comes down the chimney.

Me - stockings go in DS bedroom so he sees 'he's been' when he wakes up. Then we open the stocking gifts in bed before going downstairs to find the rest of the gifts.

If stockings are downstairs, surely they get forgotten about in the excitement and rush to open the big gifts?

DS is three so this is the first time we've had this issue!

We hung them on the outside of the bedroom door handles and then they were left just outside the bedroom door once filled. Kids used to bring them through to our room to open first before going downstairs for the rest of the presents

Ours at left by the fireplace, are filled by Santa and moved upstairs to outside bedroom doors. Opened on our bed (adults and kids)

If we have visitors, they are opened at the top of the stairs.

We put ours on the fireplace. But we say that Santa only brings the stockings not main presents, so DD is very excited about the stocking.

TeddyDidIt · 27/11/2020 10:48

I used to put them at the foot of the beds, because when I was little I LOVED waking up early Christmas morning and moving my feet around to feel the weight of the stocking!

However, now I put them just inside the door for two reasons: a) I also used to wake up and stay up from stupid o'clock on Christmas morning, and I think if they have to get out of bed to find it this is less likely to become a thing; and b) we go to bed too early now to be sure they wouldn't see us creeping into their rooms! Grin

Downstairs is already magical with all the presents under the tree, so I'm definitely in favour of the stockings being delivered to rooms.

Ours are currently hung on the fireplace, the children will hang theirs on their bedroom doors on Christmas Eve. They then usually open them together on Xmas morning before waking dh & I.

FluffMagnet · 27/11/2020 10:53

I have this argument with my DH, but the opposite round to you. I like them downstairs - I want to see the excitement and anticipation of them going down to "see" if he has been. Like a PP, Father Christmas only brings stocking presents so the big presents have been under the tree for some time and aren't quite as exciting. As kids, we used to bounce with excitement at the living room door, waiting to be told we could go in. It was fantastic!

We leave them hanging on the fireplace on xmas eve and Santa puts them on the end of the kids beds so they can poke them with their toes when they wake up and check hes been. Open upstairs in bed then downstairs to open the main presents.

howmanyroads · 01/12/2020 18:58

As PPs have said, waking up and feeling the weight of it at the end of the bed is one of my most magical memories!

InTheCludgie · 01/12/2020 19:05

We hang ours on the bedroom door handles. When DH was a boy he found out the truth about Santa when he woke up and caught his DF putting his stocking at the bottom of his bed. Neither of us were particularly keen to actually set foot into the bedrooms due to this!

Lovemusic33 · 01/12/2020 19:08

By the fire place. Made the mistake of hanging them on their bedroom door handles when younger and dd2 would never go to sleep meaning I had to wait up all night as couldn’t fill stocking until she fell asleep. Turned out she was petrified of Father Christmas coming upstairs, so they now go downstairs.

DaisyDaisydoo · 01/12/2020 19:20

Definitely agree with you. Nothing like feeling the weight at the end of the bed! Stockings are small gifts ripped open all cosy in mum and dads bed before going downstairs

TheChosenTwo · 01/12/2020 19:26

They go on beds here as I do still remember waking up to a rustling and it was the most exciting part of Christmas.

Hohomerryxmas · 01/12/2020 19:29

Kids stocking are places on the ends of the their bed I don't have anywhere to hang on my bed but I have a christmas tree in my bedroom so I leave mine and DPs stocking underneath that

bellagogosdead · 01/12/2020 19:37

I recommend getting doubles for your stockings, that way you can fill them ahead of time and then just do a quick swop.

We do this too!

Exactly this! By the bedroom door

And also this...saves so much time!
