Classical Christmas background music?

Any suggestions for some vaguely christmassy classical background music to create a bit of atmos/fill the silences (there will probably only be two of us for Christmas). Like baroque stuff but open to suggestions. Not keen on choirboys or ‘crossover’ type music as a rule, but interested to hear if others have any favourites.

Hely-Hutchinson’s Carol Symphony, aka the music from The Box of Delights, but the whole thing is delightful.

Snap! @RubaiyatOfAnyone - I play the Carol Symphony almost non-stop during December.
I also like Bach's Christmas Oratorio.

I'm a best Christmas album in the world ever person but I need some variety

@guffaux

Nutcracker score is a lovely cd for Christmas
This! It's classical and creates the mood

Harry Potter soundtrack is great, too, especially from the movies 1-3. I love A Window To The Past and used it even in my smartshow 3d slides once, it's so calming and insiring at the same time.
Plus a lot of artists have their own versions of Last Christmas or have released Christmas EPs. I know for sure that Taylor Swift did and I liked her version of White Christmas and her own song called Christmas Must Be Something More.

There's an album or two called 'Christmas goes Baroque', that is full of traditional carols but rewritten as if they'd been written in the Baroque era, which is quite fun if you like that style of music.

merryhouse · 24/11/2020 09:47

If it's Baroque you're after you can't go wrong with Messiah and Bach's Christmas Oratorio.

Thank you for starting this thread OP - I mean to post something similar every year!

I've just downloaded the classic fm app and found a Christmas section that included a Cinematic Christmas playlist (there is also a classic fm Christmas, smooth Christmas and Christmas hits playlist).

A few years ago we rented a cottage for Christmas and when we arrived they had left classic fm playing on the radio, since then we do this at home for December. It has added sentimental meaning because we inherited Nannies digital radio and she always played classic fm.

Katgolde · 24/11/2020 10:10

Bach's Christmas Oratorio.

Following for ideas! Thank you everyone

Messe de Minuit - Charpentier. Written for Christmas and it's lovely.

Love Bach's Christmas Oratorio too.

If you want something a bit more modern try 'Fantasia on Christmas Carols' by Vaughan-Williams. It's fairly short but very 'Christmassy' Smile

Katgolde · 24/11/2020 10:33

Prokofiev - Troika

It may not be exactly what you’re after, but I’m partial to instrumental covers of traditional carols. There are loads on YouTube and Spotify.

VestaTilley · 24/11/2020 15:28

Carols from Kings College Cambridge is always my go to - I made a playlist of different carols they’ve sung down the years this week.

Lalaloveyou2020 · 24/11/2020 16:19

I always put RTE Lyric FM on for the whole of Christmas day, they just play a mix of classical and choir music all day long with no talking, it's lovely. You can stream online, as I do.

John Rutter's carols and arrangements, or his Magnificat are wonderful.

Also Morten Lauridsen music, e.g. Shining Night, has a sort of Christmassy feel.

Both are modern composers but have quite a classical feel.

YouBoggleMyMind · 24/11/2020 16:35

John Rutter's Christmas music is delightful

33goingon64 · 24/11/2020 16:37

If you're ok with adult choirs, The Sixteen have several hood compilation albums

goose1964 · 24/11/2020 23:35

Classic fm have a couple of Christmas card on amazon, I looked at DHs Christmas music collection but I can't decipher the music types but he has everything from mediaeval to John Rutter, via Bohemia and folk. I can find out from him if there's anything particularly good.
