Kinetic Sand

Hi,

My daughter (age 5) has always loved playing with playdoh but seems to be growing out of that now. We’ve never had Kinetic Sand but it looks like good fun. However, where do I begin? What would make a good first purchase and what do you store it in?

Thanks in advance

It’s fab kinetic sand infact I quite like it myself. DS has it and I’ve also ordered it for my friends DD.

ballsdeep · 22/11/2020 15:17

For the love of God don't do it! It gets everywhere. It's worse than real sand. It might just be my child though as he decided to mix it with water after a while so that was swiftly thrown never to return

Lovemusic33 · 22/11/2020 15:55

My dd loves kenetic sand, she is 14 and has ASD and still plays with it, she doesn’t really use any of the tools/moulds that come with it, tbh the plastic tat that comes in the kits are not that great, you can use playdough tools which you probably already have. I haven’t found it to be messy, my dd takes it into her room in a bowl and it doesn’t get everywhere, it’s pretty easy to Hoover up if it does get anywhere. We buy the scented sand from the entertainer or Sainsbury’s.

Love51 · 22/11/2020 15:57

We bought a kit with red sand and blue sand. Now we have purple sand 🤷‍♀️

Bungle2 · 22/11/2020 21:05

Such divided opinions!!! She is normally very tidy (no mixed playdoh colours in THIS house!) so we’re going to give it a whirl. I might come back for a stern chat with some of you pro-kinetic sand users in the new year 😉🤣

It is a great toy.
Be aware that when you buy a box set of a moulded tray/sand/moulds you only get one sachet of sand - not enough to cover the base of the tray and about a sixth of what is illustrated on the box art!

Bungle2 · 23/11/2020 20:28

@BestZebbie thank you! I’ve commissioned a grandparent to buy the sandcastle set (they all want to buy them something FUN) but I’ll get an extra bag just in case. I think she’ll love it

there are plenty of online platforms available amazon won't disappoint you I bought like kits of crazy slime and kinetic sand as well. They are also interested in creating sand art bottles with colored sand try those as well.

imevarussel · 16/10/2021 15:27

got a kit from CrazySand online

RedToothBrush · 16/10/2021 15:31

We were given some. In a box never opened. Waiting for an opportunity to just gift or give away

hayley013 · 16/10/2021 15:41

We bought the ice cream stand set and it was played with more than I ever thought

YellowLogic · 16/10/2021 15:51

We keep kinetic sand sets in the shed and my daughter just thinks its an 'outside' toy. Gets played with a lot in the summer, definitely not in the house.

swashbucklecheer · 16/10/2021 15:54

We had kinetic rock (slightly bigger grains than the sand) it was the work of the devil and was binned as soon as I could manage it

Christmas1988 · 16/10/2021 19:28

Buy a big tuff tray for it to be played on, I prefer the children to play with in on a tuff tray on the floor so I can just Hoover the mess up, Smyths do a cheap £8 set that’s great it has moulds and loads of sand compared to the other brands.

YesIcan3 · 16/10/2021 19:33

My gosh what is wrong with people? Kinetic sand is fab my lo has it and yes sometimes makes a mess but guess what. U can clean up after use! Hmm

Vindo · 16/10/2021 19:35

I love it! We have the sandcastle set and I like playing with it as much as the kids. I don't find the clean up bad at all, much easier than play doh.

BlueRaincoat1 · 16/10/2021 19:41

My 3 and 5 year olds love it, I wouldn't be crazy about using it over a carpeted floor, but otherwise it cleans up easily. We have this one:
Kinetic Sand FOLDING SANDBOX www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06X6BY8TV/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_MSWAFPJNQNXVTBF9E79C?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21
The folding box is brilliant, it all stays verynself contained. Get an extra bag of sand. They play with it loads.

FelicityPike · 16/10/2021 19:50

Personally I hate the stuff.
I hope your DD enjoyed it LAST CHRISTMAS!

anyoldname76 · 16/10/2021 20:35

Any of the kinetic sand kits are good tbh, doesn't matter how many colours I buy though,my ds always mixes them and they turn brown. We've got cheap trays that we use it one so it doesnt go everywhere.

anyoldname76 · 16/10/2021 20:37

Just seen this was a post started last year, anyhoo I still enjoy playing with kinetic sand with my ds Grin
