I'm normally great at presents and collect through the year etc- this year I haven't been able to, and that coupled with lockdown and us realising we can live with less have led me here- I have thought about the upgrading current items to something nicer idea but everything is nice and doesn't need upgrading - I don't want to do a voucher for a hotel in a few months or anything like that- likewise we always buy ourselves nice food- we try to do want, need, wear, read but I am STUMPED

DH is getting:

a new jumper (exactly the same as one he already wears in a different, pre-approved colour),

an eye mask/headphones combo (he sleeps with an eye mask anyway, and has seen this one with built in headphones which should be less disruptive than him scrabbling around for his headphones every night),

some running kit (including a reflective skin balm so he can be seen at night)

Maybe some BBQ accessories (got a new BBQ over the summer), quite like the pizza oven suggestion.

Pants and socks!

Other suggestions: new Barack Obama book? Economist subscription? Various handy tools (I got him a great small bike tool kit which is small enough for him to take out with him when cycling, and he's in love with a recent purchase of an electric screwdriver!), a man bag, Smart Watch (if doesn't already have), washbag filled with toiletries,

Generally he's pretty practical and doesn't want novelty gifts. He wants what he wants, and on the whole, my 'thoughtful' off list gifts aren't as well used.

A cheese making kit and a subscription to Beerbods has gone down well in the past with DH.

I'm currently toying with the idea of a historical hoodie which links in with one of his hobbies.

Will watch this thread with interest. I need all the ideas I can get.

My purchases and ideas so far for a difficult to buy for DH.

Bought some 12/18 year old single malt hard to get whiskey for my DH to go in his collection along with some white port to go with some local cheese I have ordered. Also got a selection of chutneys/pickles from F&M, to go with said cheese.

Also some Molten brown bath stuff and the usual re-charge soap which lasts for ages.

I did miss out on some recent auction items (horse racing) which I had my eye on and he would of been thrilled with, but costs went over my budget.

Looking at a very chunky arran cardigan with a shawl collar which will really suit him, just undecided of the colour as it gets rather chilly where we live.

He needs a new pair of German haus slippers, got my eye on a pair of Haflinger boiled wool with solid soles.

Other than that I too am stumped, he buys what he needs through the year.

It's really hard isn't it

My DP is lovely, very grateful for stuff - so far I have got the idea of an antique globe- he always remarks on them if we see them in shops

....Molton Brown.....

Stompythedinosaur · 18/11/2020 18:48

Dp has a birthday just before christmas which I am giving him a new board game and some Japanese vodka.

For christmas I think I'm going to get him a telescope.

ShedFace · 18/11/2020 19:04

I’ve been similarly stumped so have just gone practical with pants, aftershave, new bike glasses, upgraded air pods, a reflective running jacket and new sliders. I got him a new smart watch and t-shirts for a recent birthday.

Get him a Toblerone.

crochetmonkey74 · 19/11/2020 06:16

I was thinking of doing a stocking for him maybe, so little things , I hope the shops open so i can go and have a browse and get some ideas!

Do you have DC? My now ex DP's favourite gift when we were together was a t shirt I had printed with a drawing the DC had done. Did it every year and he absolutely loved them and wore them to bits.

Jaffajiffy · 19/11/2020 06:27

My dh loves his sock subscription. New pair once/month

everyonebutme · 19/11/2020 06:59

Those of you who have bought smart watches...do you have any recommendations? I'm looking for one for my late teenage son. I want an Android one. He's not that sporty but has just started running (but not sure if he'll continue).

Carrie76 · 19/11/2020 07:09

DH is getting or has got in the past:
Cycling jersey
Vivioactive 4 Garmin
Espedrilles to wear at home as house shoes
Coffee subscription
Kindle
Echo
Bluetooth beenie so he can listen to music and keep his head warm!
This desk tidy with phone charging stand tidy

Carrie76 · 19/11/2020 07:11

@everyonebutme I have a garmin Vivioactive and also gave one to DH I love it as you can load music onto it so no need to bring anything with you if you fancy music while running

mdh2020 · 19/11/2020 07:40

Last year i bought my husband a bat detector and he loved it. How much do you want to spend? A few years ago the DC bought him an indoor / outdoor thermometer that has a sensor outside but you read the temperature inside the house. He also liked a fancy bird table from the RSPB and the complete works of Bach on a memory stick!
We have cupboard full of unsuccessful presents he has received including a framed print and , what was then, a state of the art iPod.
Given that we will probably go back into lockdown after Christmas, how about a board game?
This year I have bought him an external hard drive as he has a new laptop and wants to be able to play CDs while he works.

Standrewsschool · 19/11/2020 07:44

@LetsBePositive - where is the chunky Aran jumper from?

Standrewsschool · 19/11/2020 07:48

Beer subscription
Magazine subscription
Whiskey
Rum

ExpensivelyDecorated · 19/11/2020 07:58

Same here, everything anyone suggests he's either already got or wouldn't want. So far I have got him a bottle of Baileys. A bat detector sounds interesting!

Audreyseyebrows · 19/11/2020 08:04

Struggling here too! The one idea I had (Marshall wireless headphones) he found out about and doesn’t think he would use them.
I’m fed up with buying stuff that he has no interest in but he has no bloody interests!
I might just give him the money now and tell him to buy his own!

Letsbepositive · 19/11/2020 09:13

Standrewsschool , I am looking at the Irish Store, they have plenty of designs and colours. also the Aran crafts, who also have a lovely one I quite fancy.

crochetmonkey74 · 19/11/2020 09:50

Bluetooth beenie so he can listen to music and keep his head warm!

I have added this to the list!

Last year, I bought an Oddballs pants/socks subscription for DH and when he'd got a full set of new boxers and socks, we changed it to a bralette/sock subscription to me and then to the same for dd. It was possibly the most well received gift ever and has lasted a year.

This year I've bought a pocket watch, pocket squares and some fabric boutonnieres, nice coffee and some pyjamas.

makersflair.com/ this place is good for ideas too.
