Real Christmas trees

Looking for a little bit of advice please

Never had a real Xmas tree before but I have promised my daughter that this year we can have a real tree!

Normally I would put the tree up on the 1st December but do real trees last that long?! I know a friend of mine once said hers died before Xmas

Is there anything I need to do to keep it fresh? What does it sit in?

I have a living tree which is potted and goes out in the garden.
The first one I had lasted 10 years and we really only had to replace it because it became too heavy too move.

We are on the third year of the current tree - it grows about a foot a year
