Brilliant thank you.
So far I'm thinking cost Co. Usually trying to put the house together is a joke it never works and the year we tried to build it from scratch!!

@Wiifitmama I bought it in Morrisons last year.

I did a search and although listed in Amazon, Morrisons and IKEA for sale, they are all showing as out of stock ☹️

Update /I bought the Costco one, it looks fabulous.

Dh is extremely worried about sticking it together!!

Good luck with it.

If you can't find the "glue" I think a previous poster had a great suggestion with the caramelized sugar.

Just bought a lovely one in Aldi today.£4.99, pre made house, nicely presented you can see the house on display. Very happy with it.

TheCrow · 12/11/2020 12:51

I was just coming to say about the Aldi one too. I got a pouch of white chocolate buttons for roof tiles as well, think it'll look really nice when it's done!

What icing have people been using to stick the ikea one together? We used the recipe included with the pack last year (icing sugar, raw egg and lemon juice) and it was fine. I think I added a bit more icing sugar than suggested to make it stiffer.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 12/11/2020 12:56

Caramalised sugar works very well but is very dangerous so not recommended for use around young children.

Royal icing work very well and also sets rock hard. If you do the walls first and support them until set, it’s a lot easier to put the roof on once the structure is secure.

Ooh, thanks Crow im adding white chocolate buttons on my next Aldi shop.

@sugarplumfairy2010

Last year I brought a chocolate house kit as was fed up of buying gingerbread houses that didn't get eaten. The kids have asked for another this year.

That looks amazing! Where is it from?

We bought a gingerbread house kit in Asda last year which was good. We did add some extra sweets.

I wouldn’t trust myself with caramelised sugar- that stuff is nuclear.

I just use
3 egg whites
1.5 lbs icing sugar
3 tsp lemon juice

The trick is to do it in stages and hold it in place until it dries. Do a corner first and hold the two pieces until they’re dry. Put plenty of icing around the bottom too. Don’t do the roof until the walls are solid, and then just do one at a time. With little dc it’s better to assemble the house yourself before letting them loose.

I followed a tip on here one year to use white chocolate instead as it’s supposed to set quicker. Mine never set at all.

Lidl gingerbread house is great. Comes with terrifying witch made of icing! Truly! Kept wondering who the figures were for the Christmas link then realised it was Hansel and Gretel waiting to be cooked. So Christmassy! Grin However was a great gingerbread house! £5, I think.

LegoPirateMonkey · 14/11/2020 19:43

We always build ours on Christmas Eve in the day and it’s our dessert that night so it doesn’t have to hold together very long! It’s one of my favourite traditions as it’s a nice family activity and then a delicious pudding. Only one year did we have it completely collapse shortly after building and that might have been the IKEA one! I ice the Christmas cake on Christmas Eve morning as well so I always have spare royal icing that I can use for the gingerbread house as sometimes the kits are too stingy and don’t have enough in for the house so I have to supplement.

Saw this edible glue in Sainsbury's and it made me think of this thread!
