Advent calendar gifts for an 80 something

When the DC were little my DM made them beautiful advent calendars that she would fill with sweets and small gifts every year. They were always amazing, thoughtful gifts, that the DC loved and played with/used. It was a much beloved family tradition.

This year has been lonely for DM, who was shielding, so the DC and I have decided to make her an advent calendar this year as a way to cheer her up and feel closer to us during the holidays, even if we can't see her.

The problem is we have run out of ideas of what to put in the tiny 7cm square drawers! She hates chocolate, doesn't wear make up or use beauty products, doesn't enjoy cooking, so no fancy little gadgets unless they are very practical. She loves gardening, reading, scented candles, baths, nicknacks, anything to do with cats and is a bit of a foodie as long as she doesn't have to cook! DM really likes it when we bring back unusual foods from travels. She's also pretty tech savvy, has an iPad, kindle, Alexa etc.

So far we have:

Marzipan cat
Small soap
L'occitane hand cream
Unusual seeds for her latest project x 3
A waxed hyacinth bulb
Bath pearls
Travel size scented candle
Jade cat
Earrings
Tile tracker
Hair mask
Perfume
A felting kit Christmas decoration
G&T alcoholic jelly

We could just put in more of the same but we really want each day to have a thoughtful gift rather than space fillers. Even better if it is something to do/make.

Seeds - I know they come in huge packs but you could put them into something smaller.

Get the kids to write her a note each about how much they love her/hope she has a fab Christmas etc and pop those in

Could the kids decorate a small stone/pebble for her to put in her garden?

Mini jam / marmalade
Mini gin or can of pre-mix G&T
Nail polish
Face mask (beauty one, not a Covid one)
Amazon kindle voucher

Oh sorry just seen that you already had seeds on your list 🤦‍♀️

Thanks!

The DC are all at uni. And DS has just pointed out that his artistic skills are probably not much better than the average 5 YO Grin

Does she cross stitch? Sometimes age related conditions can make it difficult, but Mouseloft sell lots of little cross stitch kits, some of them Christmassy, that could be nice if she can manage it Smile

What lovely ideas everyone has come up with. I was going to suggest some of them. The only other item that I can think of is what I call a 'Trolly token'-not sure what its real name is but it's to put in the slot of a shopping trolley instead of a pound coin. That might come in handy.

She sounds like a lovely Mum and you sound like a lovely daughter Smile

If she likes scented candles I would put in a few of the small size ones of different scents. That's not duplicating for me, that's giving choices.

orangenasturtium · 31/10/2020 16:21

Thanks, everyone! Lots of great ideas.

I agree with you about the candles Butterymuffin but I have bought her a set of candles as a Christmas present as I do every birthday/Christmas so it feels like a bit of a default lazy choice. She would enjoy them though.
