Looking to buy some dumbbells for my 11.5 year old for Christmas. They come in sets. Average height and a wiry build..

Do I go 1kg, 2kg and 3kg

Or 1.5kg, 3kg and 5kg

I don’t lift weights so no idea

Many thanks

I would say 1, 2 and 3 kg should be fine at that age. You could always purchase 5 kg weights in a couple of years if they need them. But even then the lighter weights would still get use.

I thought under 16 shouldn’t use weights. I would buy resistance bands.
Was told no weights at the gym, when she joined on an under 16 membership.

I don't think they're meant to use weights at that age.
Something to do with stunting growth.
Cardio and activity is better for them.

You could get ankle weights and resistance bands for that age. And read up on weight training and strength training for that age range.

We got ours a pull up bar and looking at calastentics floor bar things....Hmm

Light dumbells are ok at that age. Heavier weights should definitely be avoided before growth plates have hardened after puberty, personally I would avoid weights entirely at that age in favour of more active exercises and leave weights for 3-4 years. What is the attraction to weights?

I didn't think young people were supposed to lift weights until they were 16 or over as it affects the growth of the young person.

Lifting weights, especially light ones, does not stunt a child's growth.
