Hiya,

Wondering if anyone has any book recommendations for a 10 year old please?

She's read Harry Potter, Jacqueline Wilson, Michael Murpurgo, all the classics etc

She's recently lost her love of reading, think she needs a bit 'more' but I worry about some of the more adult themes in some of the books which feel like the next step.

Does anyone have any recommendations please? She likes murder mysteries and stories with twists and turns if that makes sense.

Thank you!

The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan O'Dowd might be worth a try.

I was just about to write a very similar post! I am struggling with what books to buy this Christmas for my 11 year old, she's a good reader and I've been looking at older books for her but like you I'm wary of the themes being a bit too adult. Following with interest.

My dd11 is an enthusiastic reader and has romped through the murder most unladylike series (Robin Stevens) and also loved the Scarlett and Ivy series by Sophie Cleverly. She also really loved The Explorer by Kathrine Rundell.

Dd sounds like she has similar taste and she loved the murder most unladylike series, also the Disney twisted tales.

She’s a couple of years older and currently working her way through Terry Pratchett, so maybe at ten the Tiffany aching witches series.

I read Jurassic Park at 12. It's a brilliant book and makes you so curious about all the complex science he puts so well into laymen's terms.

Goosebumps or maybe some of the old Point horror books.

Would the classic murder mysteries (Agatha Christie's, Sherlock Holmes type of books) work?

STARE2016 · 19/10/2020 00:38

Thank you all for your suggestions! She's read The London Eye Mystery the Disney twisted tales, the Scarlett & Ivy books & the Murder Most Ladylike series. She gets through things quite quickly!

I will have a look at all the others tomorrow, thank you again!

I’ve just had a look on my amazon account for what I was buying dd at that age, fantasy and later dystopian type stories have always been her preference though.

Percy Jackson (still one of her guilty pleasures age 17!)
Oksa Pollock series
Inkheart trilogy
Emily Windsnap series
Ruby Redfort Series (might be a good choice for your dd, from I remember they’re about a girl who is a detective)
Several by Eva Ibbitson
Tamarind Trilogy
The Thirteen Treasures series
The Frog Princess & sequels

The first YA books she read were Hunger Games and Noughts and Crosses but she was more 11/12 I think.

Ooh Jurassic Park is a good suggestion. Will have a look at some of the others too thanks for the recommendations.

The Phillip Pullman books are a good follow on from Harry Potter. Also classics like Little Women, Ballet Shoes. More challenging but without the too-adult themes.

My 11yr old loves the Sisters Grimm series, she's just read all 10 books again in a week!
She's read all but the last (not the new) Twilight series.
The older Holly Webb books are good, the Venice series are some she really enjoyed.
I'm getting her some Katherine Rundell's for Christmas, and I'd like her to try the Rick Riordan mythical series, but I'm not sure she'll take to them.
